There is a great possibly that my Choplins who reside primarily in N.C., but also Missouri, Oklahoma, with a few in Indiana, Ohio, and Florida descend from JAMES JOPLIN. We have no apparent connection with the Choplins of Louisiana. The Choplins in and around Raleigh, N.C. are Descendents of William Joplin ( Choplin ), a son of James Joplin.

They changed the spelling from Joplin to Choplin in the late 1800s. My branch of the family moved to Yadkin County ( then Surry), NC about 1839.They had already changed their name from Joplin to Choplin at that time. We don't know why the name was changed. My earliest proven Choplin ancestor was Robert Choplin, spelled Joplin in 1835, when he married Ann Winston in Franklin County, NC.

They had three sons Sidney, Joseph and Wesley born in Franklin CO, before they moved to Yadkin ( Surry ). We have located the family Bible, dated 1835, and the first three sons names were splled Joplin. I think that Robert Choplin and the Choplin ladies that were married in Franklin County, were the childern of James Joplin's eldest son Mordecai Joplin, who was married to Nancy LEE in 1803, Wake CO, NC.

NOTES: Mary CARR
As for the changing of the spelling of, JOPLIN to CHOPLIN look at the way they wrote, I have paper that have a " J " but it looks like a C and H some people were not good writers...

Notes for Nancy Lee:
Nancy had a family of girls, and one young son Bobby. There were few things that women could do in those days to earn a living. The mother and daughters did fine sewing for a living. Men's dress shirts opened in the back and had a bosom or front elaborately made up of a lot of tiny tucks.

There were no sewing machines, and woman who could make fine tucks and make good -0 looking coats, pants and vests could get plenty of work. Most women could make dresses, and do plain sewing, but thoes who couldn't liked to hire their best garmets made. In 1823, Nancy remarried, this time to Ellis Garrott, and moved to Franklin County.

Mordecai died in Dec 1814 War of 1812 , leaving Nancy with six small childern, who names were not listed in Mordecai's estate records.\\

I,am sure this is right, because Mordicai Joplin was who Robert went to live with after his father death. Look at court records in sources of James Joplin estate. The first two childern of Robert and Ann Winston Joplin had the Joplin name but the rest had the name CHOPLIN. But some of Ann childern were born after 1850 when ROBERT & MARY ' POLLY" JOPLIN were toghter. And they live in South Carolina, is there another Robert Joplin, that no one nos about.?
************************************************************************************
What i don't understand is that he married ANN WINSTON and had another family of childern, I no that he is the right one because, i have the other Robert Joplin who is Mark Joplin son, that family line I come from. There were only two Robert Joplin beside Robert Joplin who was the father of James & Mark Joplin Robert is the son of James Joplin Sr. Did he just up and leve Ann Winston Joplin and go to Mary Rochelle, or what at this time i don't no.\\

The ans, to all ? about Robert Joplin is that he was born 1813 and is more then likely a grandson to James & Lydia Joplin. This is the way I get this from Larry Choplin. So their is two Robert Joplins. Not sue that Larry Choplin nos the father to his Robert Choplin, But they are family of Jame and Lydia Joplin .

Don't think Aley Elly Choplin's father, Robert Joplin, was our Robert, for our Robert was born in 1813. He married Anne Winston in Franklin County in 1835,had 3 childern there and moved to Surry Yadkin County in 1839. Robert and Anne stayed in Yadkin County and raised 11 more childern there, four who died in Civil War with a son-in-law. Robert and Anne were on Surry Census 1840, and after that part of Surry became Yadkin in 1850, on every census through 1880. We located the family Bible which spelled their names Joplin in Franklin, and Choplin in Surry/ Yadkin.\\\\
===============================================================
I have not got proof only 1850 Census Wake County, NC and the wills and court records. But all the sister and brother are the same age. I do think that Lyida Mobley was the second wife of James the first five childern are older look at 1790 Census.

All of the information came from WFT # 1 Tree 1560. Larry CHOPLIN>
