J.F. Nolen sheriff of Gallatin County, was born in Wilson County Tenn, in 1844. The son of Daniel and Lucinda Joplin the former of Irish descent born in 1808 in North Carolina, and the latter also a natvie of North Carolina. The date of their death are 1856 and 1878 respectively. The father a shoemaker and afterward farmer went to Wilson County, Tenn and about 1854 moved to Franklin County, ILL. Our, sub - ject, one of thirteen childern, with few educational advantages, no schooling after his tenth year, left home August 2, 1863 to join Company A, One Hundered and Tenth Regiment Illinois Infantry. He was sent home after being in service for several weeks, and having "enlisted for the war " again enlisting twice afterward in the Thirteenth Illinois Cavalry as recuit in the one hundred day's service in Col. Fred A. John's regiment, and in October,1864, he was in several minor action in the first, and the surrender occurred soon after the second. After farming some he went to Equality, ILL enggaging in the retail Liquor and grocery business for three years, since when he has been in Shawneetown. Appointed deputy circuit court clerk in 1870, he served six years, and then was elected ckerk, serving until 1884. He then established his present grocery business and in 1886 was elected to his present office of sheriff In 1864 he married, Artimissa " Reevers" Beevers, a native of Arkansas born in 1844. They had two childern: Ellen, wife of G. A. Harmon and Millard he being divorced from first wife in 1866, married Elizabeth Holley in 1871 born in Gallatin County in 1837. Their two childern are Edward and Harry, Mr .Nolen is a Republican, a member of the L. O. O. F. & A. M. and G. A. R. and his wife is a member of the Methodist Eqiscopal Church.\\
