Notes for Daniel Marion Maude Joplin:
SOURES: Earl Furlong Athes, IL

My grandfather Daniel " Dan " Joplin died when I was 4 years old. I have vague memories of him. I have talked to several people about him, trying to get some idea of what he was like as a person and how he farmed. Dan's Dad, Mark Joplin, died when Dan was about 5 years old. Mark settled in Franklin Co., IL in the early 1850's. His was built where Four Mile Lane and Highway 149 joined. He owened several acres. The Joplin cemetery is located about 2 miles down Four Mile Lane and 1 mile toward # 18 mine.

This covers a large area. His stepson William Luster recevied a large section of this land when he came of age. Kell was left the old JOPLIN home. It burned in the early 1940's. When Dan married Ella Smothers I was told they started with nothing. If what I was told is correct, they lived in a small house on William Luster's land and Dan worked for him.

I have been told that my Grandmother was the best dancer in the area. They would attend any dance that was close. They traveled by horse and buggy and danced untill early morning the next day. I have been told that Kell was an excellent musician, so I assume he played at the dances. Ella's Dad started the town of Logan at that time it was Smothersville. He owned a store and sold several lots in town. He died when Ella was 15 years old. She was married at 16 and Dan was 19.

They were both small people. Ella's mother Elizabeth Pinkston Smothers gave each of her childern $500.00 to get started with. the understanding thatshe would live with each one 6 months at a time. Dan & Ella bought their first farm with this money. They farmed and started a dairy herd. He lived this way untill around 1936 when he started selling out and retired. Their farm was south of Logan.

In march of 1925 they leased a farm that was called the JessiePayne farm. It was owned by the Peabody Coal Company. There was 520 acres. three houses were on the this farm. Dan & Ella lived in one, George and Tressie Furlong in one and Edwary Joplin in one. This was also the year of the tornado, but that is another story. In 1925 they had 25 cows they milked by hand. 35 head of dry cattle and yearlings, about 50 head of cattle, 50 head of hogs, and about 200 chickens as well as some turkeys and geese. In 1925 this was the largest farm in the area.\

Dan had 12 horess and mules and one Fordson tractor. They plowed with the tractor when it would run and used hores and mules when it did not run. All of the planting was done with horses and mules. They planted 100 acres of corn, 80 of oats and 80 of wheat. there was 60 acres for pasture for cows and young stock. 90 acres for hay, 90 acres wooded bottom land near the creek.

Each day they had about 50 gallon of milk. Most of this was sold to the West Frankfort dairy. It had to be there by 8am. The dairy would not take milk after 8am. Their day started around 4am every day, With dairy farming there was never a day off..... The cows had to be milked every day. During the depression the dairy would not buy all of the milk as they had no market for it. Grandma Ella started making butter and selling this and eggs whenever she could.

What they could not use they gave to people that did not have a cow. Dan hired several men to help farm. He would pay them one dallor a day and they were glad to just have a job. I was told that several times they would take wheat and take it to Benton to have ground for flour. He loaned milk cows to several people with childern so they could have milk. In the late 1920's he bought a McCormick Deeing tractor and a new bailer and started bailing for other farmers for two cents a bail.

Later on he and Vallie Neal bought a thrasher machine together. The thrasher and new tractor cost around $2000. They started thrashing for other farmers. Leslie did most of the tractor driving. Doing all this farming, they never missed going to church every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. I was told that their house was an open house for every preacher and evangelist that came to the Logan church.

Everyone I have talked to said he was one of the most honest men they had ever met. His word was as good as a bank note and he tried to be fair with everyone. He had a quick temper and felt if he told you once to do something he had better not tell you again. I feel if we had more people like him today the world would be a better place.

In 1935 he gave up this farm and settled on Joplin Hill. This was a small farm of 60 acres. He had a stroke in 1937 and died November 11, 1939.
