Watching TV used to be an adventure, In the late 50 we didn't own a television. But I can recall going down the street once to the Chishams, and we watch, their new television. As we left Mr Chishams said to dad come back but I don't think we did Dad and Mom had very little money in those days. And I am sure that if they had any money they would have had one. As time went by Johnny bought them one. We all huddled around the black & white set to watch the, Lone Ranger. Mysteriour spasmes of static sometimes interrupted John Cameron Swazey reporting the evening news. We would jump from are chair to adjust knobs at the back of the set. Sometimes the screen was a series of black lines. Other times blackness crowed inward from the sides. These maladies meant Johnny would spend the rest of the evening thinkering. Removeing the Tv's back cover and leaving the set plugged in, Johnny checked out the glass vacuum tubes. He tapped each one gently with a finger to determine which were not properly lighted.......... Then, he pulled the plug. " There is still a high charge of electricity around the back of the picture tube," he warned us. When he reached inside, I made a noise,Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz." Johnny jumped, pulling his hand back. He would get mad at us. He extracted supicious looking tubs, which came in various sizes. Each was marked with a number and letter code.Johnny, handled them with care, "they contain dangerours chemicals." Off he would go to Granty's drug store which had a special tub testing machine. The first TV was a table model there were round tubs like Uncle Frank Lancaster had, we would go to his house and watch Lone Ranger, We all had fun, did not think much about the TV getting, better in a few days it was on the blink again. \\\\\\

The most resounding memory for all of us was the flood of 1951. We can echoed experiences of families driving across the viaduct between the two Kansas Citys. We all rememberd viewing the rising water, the animals stranded on building tops, the floating debris, the jobs and homes lost and the rebirth of Kansas City,. I was only 10 years old and all that water was only vivid memory of that experience. But I will always remember it. Betty my older sister lived across the river, to get to her house you had to cross the viaduct. My dad said he could remember 1903 flood.He was young him self.
