Marguerite never knew her mother, her mother died when she was 2 years old. Her earliest memory is when she was 3 or 4, she wanted her sister DAISY to dress her. But Daisy was sick and couldn't dress her so she was chased around a table until she finally threw her clothes in the fire. When she was about 4 and 1/2 her family moved to Cottage Grove, Oregon from Alpha, Washington. But because she couldn't go to school yet she stayed a year with her aunt (Sarah Parnel (Sadie) Nelson). In first grade her teacher asked her how old she was and she answered she was half as old as the old grey mare and twice as old as the cow. This was something her brother (Emmett) would always tease her and tell her. The teacher finally had to go upstairs and ask Marguerite's sister (Rose) how old she was. In 1922 her brother (Emmett) took her up to Onalaska, Washington in a motorcycle with a side car to see her other brother and his wife (James and Florence), while she was up there she also saw her uncle (James). When she was 7 her family moved to Graton, CA for a year then they moved back to Cottage Grove in 1924. In the summer of 1925 her father (Robert Burnside) was having medical problems and thought he wasn't going to live so he had Marguerite and her sister ROSE legally adopted and went to California. Marguerite was adopted by Albert & Juliet Hull of Cottage Grove, OR and Rose was adopted by the Williams family. While staying with the Hull family Marguerite learned how to play the piano. In 1928, three years later Robert Burnside came back and went to court to get his daughters back. Then Robert Burnside took his daughter back to Graton, California, on the way there the family saw Mt. Lassen erupt. When they got to California Marguerite stayed with her sister (Myrtle) for a three years because Robert wasn't physically or financially able to take care of her or Rose. She went to school in Geyserville but during the summers she stayed with her father in houses that were provided to them because they worked on a farm. In the summer of 1932 Robert Burnside suffered a heart attack while herding some sheep. After not coming home his family went looking for him, they found him the next morning in a field. Because of Roberts condition Marguerite had to stay again with her sister (Myrtle) in Geyserville, California. In 1933 when she was 17 years old she left Geyserville, CA and moved into an apartment with a friend in San Fransisco, CA. There she made sandwiches for the Morning Glory Sandwich Company and made 33&1/3 cents per hour. In 1935 after the death of her father she moved to Long Beach, California and met her future husband (George (Hancock) Carlyle) at a dance hall. And because California required a 3 day waiting period before getting marred and Arizona didn't they went to Yuma, Arizona and got married in 1936. In the summer of 1944 she moved to Glenhaven, California and its there in 1945 she made a wall of rocks that still stands there to this day. They also built, owned and operated a resort called Fish Harbor. In 1949 her and George moved to Yuba City, California and it is here she started a job with the school cafeteria in 1951. After 4 years as a cook she was made manager of the high school cafeteria. Later when the school district consolidated, she was made supervisor of the school lunch program for the district. She retired after 22 years of service as a supervisor of the district schools in 1973. In the summer of 1976 her and George moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where her son (Ed) was stationed from the Army. In 1977 after having marital problems her and George left Oklahoma and moved to Glendale, Oregon where they divorced. But when trying to divorce, George told her he wasn't sure there divorce was legal any ways. The reason why was because he wasn't sure his first wife had divorced him.
