Daniel J. Cardwell - He was born about 1820 in Tennessee according to various census records. He died after June 8, 1880 in Graniger County, Tennessee. That was the date the 1880 census was taken in that county. Daniel J. Cardwell appears to be the brother of Mary Eglantine Cardwell. She married Abel Hill in about 1827 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Daniel is listed next door to the couple in the 1840 census ogf Grainger County, Tennessee, prior to Abel and Mary's move to Illinois. Daniel was the bondsman to the marriage of George Dyer and Mildred Cardwell on February 13, 1838 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Just a couple of weeks prior to his marriage, Daniel J. Cardwell was the bondsman for the marriage of Pleasant Dyer and Margaret Lain/Lane on February 21, 1839 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Daniel J. Cardwell married Frances “Fanny” Norris on March 3, 1839 in Grainger County, Tennessee.
Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the 1840 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee (Daniel Cardwell 00001-10001) in the 14th District on page 24. He living next to Mary Eglantine Cardwell Hill and her husband, Abel (Abel Hill 021001-221011) and James Dyer, Jr. (James Dyer, Jr. 000001-32001). James Calvin Cardwell, future son of Daniel, would eventually marry one of James Dyer’s daughters, Elizabeth J. Dyer.
The Grainger County, Tennessee Court ordered a list be made of all Free White Males of the County. Daniel J. Cardwell appears on that list on June 7, 1841. He is listed in the 1850 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee (Daniel J. Cardwell – family #247 – page # ?). This is where the names and birth years of his children are established. There are few records of Daniel J. Cardwell in the records of Grainger and Union Counties, Tennessee, but one that is found is the Union County, Tennessee. Union County, Tennessee County Court Minutes - August 4, 1856 – “Ordered by the Court that a Jury of review be appointed to alter and change a road of the 2nd class. Commencing on the top of Cooper Ridge above Wm. T. Cardens, to intersect the Flat Creek Road near Daniel Cardwells. Consisting of the following Jurors; Wm. Hubbs, Sr., John Hill, K.C. Hill, Nathaniel Acuff, Robert Field and James Hubbs.”
Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the 1860 Union County, Tennessee census. (Daniel J. Cardwell – family # 342 – page # 48) Union County was formed from the parts of Grainger, Claiborne, Campbell and Knox Counties in 1860. Additional children are added from this record. Warwick’s Chapel Church was organized in June 1869 in Lutrell, also known as Cedarford, in Union County, Tennessee. The early meetings were held in the home of John Ferguson, but a building was constructed in 1871 on land that was donated by J. Sterling Warwick. The members of Warwick’s Chapel Church are recorded in the Church records and the following charter members joined from the Powder Springs Gap Church of Grainger County; Daniel Cardwell, Fannie Cardwell, E.W. Popejoy, Mary Popejoy, James Hubbs, Elizabeth Hubbs, Josephine Hickle, James Dyer, Jr. and James Dyer, Sr.
In a thorough examination of the Deed Books of Grainger and Union Counties, Tennessee it appears that Daniel J. Cardwell never owned any land. This indicates that he was a sharecropper, which is a term used to describe a person that farms the land of someone else and shares a portion of their profit with the land owner. No known deed that mentions Daniel J. Cardwell is known to exist.
Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the 1880 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee. He is living next to James Cardwell, son of Perrin Cardwell and Eliza Norris, and also John Tilman Cardwell who is his youngest son. Frances is still living and with them in their home is Lewis Cardwell, listed as a grandson. Daniel J. Cardwell lists that he was born in Tennessee. That his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Frances Norris Cardwell states that she was born in Tennessee and both of her parents were born in North Carolina. This is the last known record of Daniel J. Cardwell and it can be assumed that he died sometime after the 1880 census, which was taken on June 8, 1880. __________________________________________________________________________________
