"The Cardwell family first appears as landed gentry in the county of Wiltshire in southwest England. The county seat and regligious center is Salisbury, famous for its medieval cathedral and prehistoric Druid ruins at near-by Stonehenge.
The name Cardwell is of Norman origin; possibly the family came to Englnad in 1066 with William the Conqueror. the name was then "de Cardwecille"; all were Roman Catholics.
The earliest member of the family recorded by name is William de Cardeville, listed in the census of 1273 (then known as the hundred Rolls) a gentleman farmer in Wiltshire. A Richard de cardwville lived near Southhampton during the thirteenth and early fourteenth century. Variations of the name were Cardwll, Cardwele, Cordwell, Cardwill, Cardewell and Cardwell. Standardized spelling did not appear until the early nineteenth century.
It is believed that the first Cardwell to emigrate to the New World came from England, via Wales, in the early seventeenth century and settled in the Middle Nexk of Tidewater Virginia, in what is now known as King William County, on the south bank of the Mattiponi River. "
