Mary “Polly” Cardwell was born about 1842 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Mary Cardwell is listed in the home of Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris in the 1850 Grainger County, Tennessee census. She is listed as being eight years old on that census. (Daniel J. Cardwell – Grainger County, Tennessee #1826-Family #247). In the 1860 census Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the newly formed Union County records. (Dan Cardwell – Union County, Tennessee page 48, family # 342). Mary Cardwell is listed as being 18 years old. The 1870 Union County, Tennessee Census finds Mary Cardwell still living at home with her parents, Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris. She is twenty-eight years old. There is no record of her after that census. It is possible that Mary Cardwell had some children out of wedlock that lived with the family.
