Alfred Cardwell was born in December 1, 1843 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He served as a Private in Company A of the 1st Tennessee Infantry, USA during the Civil War. He married Marinda J. Dyer on July 31, 1869 in Union County, Tennessee. She died on April 1, 1883 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Alfred Cardwell is listed census record with Isabel Nance, which appears to be his second wife, but she is not listed in any of his pension records. According to the 1880 Union County, Tennessee Isabel Nance was born about 1852. Alfred Cardwell applies for a Civil War Pension on February 25, 1890 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Those records state that he enlisted on February 28, 1863 and was honorably discharged on August 3, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. It states that he was 5’6” tall and had a dark complexion, dark hair and yellow eyes. Alfred Cardwell suffered with rheumatism that he contracted in the Fall or Winter of 1863. He received a pension of $17 dollars per month. Alfred appears to have remarried a third time to Sarah J. Mitchell on August 31, 1883 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Sarah Jane Mitchell Cardwell died on December 19, 1903 in Knox County, Tennessee. Alfred Cardwell died of flux on July 22, 1913 in Knox County, Tennessee and is buried at the Little Flat Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Corryton, Knox County, Tennessee. __________________________________________________________________________________
