Notes for H
ANS PHILLIPPE:

An early letter (written in German) states that these Philippi’s moved to Alsace from Switzerland in 1650. “European records of the family are sketchy. One story has us connected to King Louis XIV as being descendants of him and his second mistress —via the Duke of Orleans. This has not been documented however.
A charming, but totally unauthenticated family story has the original family patriarck in the army of Alexander The Great and stationed on the very western limits of the empire. Since he was from the gold mining town of PHILIPPI (named after Alexander's Father, King Philipp) he was known as ? (first name unknown) of Philippi. After retirement from the army, he decided to take up residence in what is now Switizerland near where he had served his duty, and had married a local woman and started a family. He worked as a guide along the trade route between the iron workers of the Northern European counties (France and Germany), and the merchants of Italy, Greece, etc. His name eventually was shortened to ? Philippi, which became the family surname.
Reverend Alexander Phillippe tells us that the ancestral home of the family (and this is more probable) was in Leipsic, Germany where men of this name occupied professional chairs in the University of Leipsic for 300 years. Since the family was traditionally Huguenot or Protestant, religious pressures of the day probably forced them to migrate to eastern France, southern Germany, Holland and finally to the United States.”
