When these people began settling the Piedmont area of VA, John Phillippe was the first to come to western Virginia, John and Eva having joined the westward migration at the close of the Rev. War.

  Notes for SOPHIA BARBARA PHILLIPPE:

The Kegley Library at the college at Wytheville, VA records that John's daughter Barbara, after attending Catechetical instruction for two weeks became very scrupulous and extremely conscientious. She was weak and imagined death was near. The other children were healthy and vexed Barbara so she decided to punish them and never speak again except to Rev. Paul Hinkle. This had to be Sophia Barbara, since the first child of John died in a little over a month after she was born. And the record states that in 1789, when a group of women at the Thomas Copenhaver home, Rev. Hinkle first administered communion, talked to Barbara in sign language, and tried to talk her out of her "dumb spirits" as the women called it , to no avail. He finally became frustrated and knocked her bonnet off, and then commanded her to speak in the name of Jesus, which she did repeating the Lord's Prayer, following the Creed and it's explanation. Thereafter she spoke to everyone.
