Notes for JOSIAH SHIELDS:
      Josiah and his wife Martha Bingham came to Indiana about 1827 from Pittsylvania County, Virginia with her parents Edmund Bingham and Lucy Bays. They had 4 children at the time who were Vincent, Lucy , Joan and Elizabeth. They came through southwest Virginia, through the Cumberland Gap into Tennessee, across Kentucky and on to Greene County Indiana in Richland Township.
      In Court Order Book 16 1813-1815 Pittsylvania Co., VA Josiah was fined for striking William Whitlock on 5-21-1815 p.475. Also in May 1815 a Susan Shields had taken William Whitlock to court for support of her 2 bastard children Esee and Sally and he was ordered to pay till they were 7. p.466
