Notes for L
UCY SHIELDS:
THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, January 12, 1911, Volume XXXV, Number 9, Page 1, Column 2, “DEATHS.” [Transcribed from microfilm records at the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library, Bloomfield, Indiana.]
In the passing of Mrs. Lucy WORKMAN last Thursday evening, Bloomfield lost one of its oldest and best known of the pioneer women. She had been in declining health for several months, but refused to go to the home of any of her relatives to live, preferring to spend her remaining days in the house she had so long occupied, which is located on the North Washington Street hill, across the street from the cemetery, where her remains were deposited last Saturday forenoon.

She was a native of North Carolina, removing here with her parents when quite young. She was past ninety-six years old. She reared a large family of children and her survivors include a son, grandchildren, great- and great great grandchildren. A few months ago the NEWS published a picture of Mrs. WORKMAN seated in front of her home, surrounded by her son, Isaac WORKMAN, his son Calvin WORKMAN, his daughter, Mrs. Bert DORRIS and her daughter, showing five generations of the WORKMAN family.

She was the mother of twelve children, the survivors being Mrs. Israel WILKIE and Isaac WORKMAN, of this place, and John B. WORKMAN of Lyons.

  Notes for ISAAC WORKMAN:
THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, January 9, 1913, Volume XXXVI, Number 8, Page 4, Column 2, “DEATH’S HARVEST. Workman.” [Transcribed from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.]
Isaac WORKMAN, son of John and Lucy WORKMAN, was born in Richland Township, Greene County, Indiana, March 10, 1838, and departed this life at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Asbury FRY, Jan. 4, 1913, being seventy-four years, nine months and twenty-four days old. He had six brothers and two sisters, but only one brother and one sister survive him. They are John B. WORKMAN, of Lyons, Ind., and Mrs. Joan WILKIE, of Bloomfield, Ind.

He was married to Kiziah WILKIE August 1860. To their marriage eleven children were born, but two of them have putoff this earthly tabernacle. The departed ones are Mrs. Josie COLEMAN and Mrs. Sadie EATON. The surviving children are Calvin WORKMAN, Bloomfield, Mrs. Emma DAILY, Park, Indiana, Mrs. Dora FRY, Bloomfield, John W. WORKMAN, Plummer, Indiana, Clyde Workman, Wheatland, Indiana, Mrs. Minnie ANDERSON, Danville, Ill., Edward WORKMAN, Danville, Ill., Mrs. Nellie EMERY, Bloomfield, and Frank WORKMAN, Bloomfield.

After his marriage he lived in Center Township till the time of the death of his wife, which occurred about six years ago, after which he moved to Bloomfield where he has since made his home.

He had not been well for several years but was not confined to his bed till five weeks ago, when he went to visit his daughter, Mrs. Dora Fry, having taken ill there, and remained so till the end came. He is survived by thirty-one grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two years ago last summer there were five generations of his family residing in Bloomfield.

He was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting in COMPANY C, 174TH REGIMENT INDIANA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY, and was mustered out of service at the close of the war.

In his early manhood he became a member of the Richland Church at Ridgeport, and continued with that organization till it was disorganized. He never joined any other congregation. His devotion as husband, father, brother, friend and Christian is a rich legacy of those who had the privilege of enjoying it. His utmost confidence as to the future and his expressed willingness and readiness to accept and be with Christ, “which is for better,” are the greatest consolation to his loved ones in their sorrow. After short services at the residence of Mrs. Dora FRY, services were also held in the Presbyterian Church on Monday at 2:00 p.m. by Elder J. A. SPENCER, assisted by Rev. L. P. MARSHALL and Rev. R. W. RAAF. Interment in Grandview Cemetery.
