The family history of James Smallwood has been researched back to his great grand father Austin Smallwood who was born in 1815 in Tennessee. Austin was married to Ellen (last name unknown)who was born in 1840 in Virginia. Austin and Ellen had two children. The name of the first child is unknown at this writing. The secon child Henry S. Smallwood was born May 1860 in Georgia.

Henry married Brittie Mitchell who was born in 1861, they lived in the Thomasville, Ga area. To this union ten children were born; Annie, Joe, Eida, Janie, Lula, Ellen, Henry, Solomon, Daniel and Mary Etta.

Brittie's parents were Tom and Mandy Mitchell. Lula Smallwood married Mel Scott and to this union thirteen children were born: Clara, Jessie Belle, Mary Lou, Hope Lee, Corine, Rosa Lee, John, Don, Ruby, Barbara, Mel Jr. Doris, and Mary Etta.

Henry Smallwood married Leila Presley, at this writing only two children are known, Roscoe and Essie. Ellen Smallwood was widowed and had two children, a daughter named Annie Higgins, the second child was a son however his name is not known at this time.

In 1899 Janie Smallwood bore James Smallwood. James was reared by his grandparents Henry S. and Brittie. Later Janie married Dan McClain and to this union four children were born; Bulah, Ira, Eva and William. After the death of Dan, Janie married Emmitt Hammond, from this union three children were born; Irene, Clifford and Monroe.

James Smallwood met Emma Reddick, the daughter of Jacob Reddick and Janie Sharpe Reddick. Jacob andf Janie had eight Children, three died in infancy. Emma had one sistr, Dora. Three brothers, Joseph (aka Buddie), Wesley, and Frank. Dora and Joseph were twins.

Jacob's fathers's name was Nicholas Reddick who was a slave master.Based on the cenus records Nicholas raised Jacob as his own. Jacob's mother is unknown at this time, and is assumed to have been a slave hand.

Jacob was married twice, first to Ellen Mitchell in 1876 . To this union one child was born, James Edward Reddick.
