The Ferrells came from Ireland.
O'Farrell, the Lord of Annaly in County Longford, was seated at his fortress, "Longphuirt Ui Fheargaill". Hence came the name of the town and County of Longford in all probability. The family is often cited in the Annals of the Four Masters and other ancient Irish texts. Of this family two branches are well known, O'Farrell Boy (buidhe-yellow) and O'Farrell Bane (Ban- meaning white or fair).
In 1659 Farrall was a principal name in Dublin, also found in Roscommon. Farrell, at that time, was a principal name in various counties.
As a rule the 'O' before the name has been lost for many generations up until the turn of the century.
Also of note, MacRannall or Reynolds, of the race of Ir, or Clanna Rory, are of the same stock as the O'Farralls of Annaly.

September 16, 1873 in Logan County, WV Married, Mahilla Tiller Abt. 1836, b. Abt. 1816, d. Aft. 1900 Lincoln County, WV *4.John Anderson Ferrell, b. June 22, 1858 in Logan County, WV d.January 21, 1942 & buried at Branchland, Lincoln County, WV. M. Almeda Christine Roy *5. Elzie Walter Ferrell, b.February 19,1897 in Branchland, Lincoln County died February 20, 1978 in Kanawha County,WV; married August 9, 1921 Lincoln County, WV to *(1). Martha McCallister b.July 3,1901 Garretts Bend, Lincoln County, WV. daughter of Alford McCallister and Julia Ann Lawson; d.November 12, 1938 buried in Lincoln County,WV. married (2).Mary Estep Saunders September 1,1941. Mary Estep Saunders b. September 14, 1903 Branchland, Lincoln Co, WV, d. June 5, 1997. *6. Willard P. Ferrell, b. June 30, 1923 in Hubball, Lincoln County, WV. M. Linda Lucille Jett May 3, 1946, b.March 22, 1927 in Clio, Roane County, WV d. September 30, 2002. *7. Linda Dianne Ferrell.

    Born June 22, 1858; died January 18, 1942. Married Almeda Christine (nickname Tina or Latinia)Roy. Some members of the family say that after John Ferrell's parents died he and his two brothers left Matewan and came to Guyandotte and lived on a river boat house for some time. Martha, his first daughter-in-law, knew she was dying and asked John A. Ferrell to promise to watch after her children. John did as he promised until his son remarried. I was told he was a good and just man.
