Descendants of John Cochran

Generation No. 2

2. Hugh13 Cochran (John12, John11, John10, Robert9, Alan8, John7, Robert6, William5, Gosiline4, John3, William2, Waldeve ? Walddemar1 de Cochrane) was born Abt. 1573 in Scotland.

Notes for Hugh Cochran:
Deaf Robert wrote in his manuscript that he didn't have many particulars about Hugh Cochran and his family. He knew several of them, namely Hugh Kittough and John Ro so called and his son, Robert, called Gentle Robert, and his son Robert. They had the oversight of the fishery. Young Robert enlisted in the King's service and was clerk to the troops.

Thomas, another of Hugh's descendants, who lived in Derry, had two wives, one called Diglish, the other called Georgy. He had three sons, George, James (who was a merchant in Londonderry), and William is youngest son, was a ship's Captain.

From "Chronicles of the Cochrans" by Ida Cochran Haughton, 1915, Vol 2, page 64: "It would seem that the Cochrans had made settlements on both sides of the Lough and it's tributaries. The Roe or Red River was the seat of John Roe, son of Hugh, oldest son of John, who came from Scotland and located on, or at the foot of, Faughan River, after leaving Griblen. Hugh, second, son of Hugh, the oldest son of John of Scotland located on the River Killough, on the eastern coast of Ireland."

Children of Hugh Cochran are:
4. i.   JOHN ROE14 COCHRAN, b. Abt. 1597, Carrikeel, Antrim, Ireland.
ii.   HUGH KITTOUGH COCHRAN, b. Abt. 1600.
5. iii.   THOMAS COCHRAN, b. Abt. 1602, Londonderry, Ireland.

3. James13 Cochran (John12, John11, John10, Robert9, Alan8, John7, Robert6, William5, Gosiline4, John3, William2, Waldeve ? Walddemar1 de Cochrane) was born Abt. 1575 in Fernois, Paisley, Renfrenshire, Scotland, and died 1635 in Carrikeel, Antrim, Ireland. He married Janet Burns June 02, 1595 in Ro Water, Ulster, Ireland. She was born Abt. 1576 in Ro Water, Ulster, Ireland, and died 1660 in Ro Water, Ulster, Ireland.

Notes for James Cochran:
Deaf Robert wrote of James: "He was in Trance three quarters of an hour, in which he had some discovery of Heaven and Hell and some visible sight of two persons of the Glorious Trinity the Father and the Son, but he could not so well discern the Holy Ghost. As his wife was weeping by him he said to her, hold your peace, weep not, for you and I will live fifteen years together, which accordingly was accomplished. He lived 70 years and his wife above 90 years. Before her death 42 grandchildren, 43 of her grandchildren's children and 3 of the fourth generation were born." The Old Cochran manuscript named James as the first John's youngest son who married Janet Burns, and the children he listed as William, Robert, James, John, Ninian (or Ringan), Janet and Agnes.
History of this time: In 1567, James VI (only one years old) was named King of Scotland when his mother Mary Stuart abdicated. After Queen Elizabeth I of England died in 1603, he also became King James I of England. His mother, Mary, Queen of Scots, had been beheaded in 1587 in England when her son was 20 years old.
The county of Ulster contains the city of Derry (or Londonderry) and the towns of Coleraine, Limavady, Magherafelt and Portstewart.
From "Chronicles of the Cochrans" by Ida Cochran Haughton, 1915, Vol 2, page 64: "James, the second son, of John of Scotland is designated as "old James of Moboy" in the manuscript (Deaf Robert's). Maboy probably was in the vicinity of Lough Foyle".
Marriage/birth dates from WFT Vol. 23 #604 - source unknown. The birth dates were certainly well beyond the "normal" range for the marriage date. James' DOB was given as July 01, 1555, but seems wrong, as does Janet's DOB of May 20, 1560.

Notes for Janet Burns:
Janet Burns was named as the wife of James, the first John's youngest son, according to the old Cochran manuscript written by Deaf Robert Cochran c1730. He also named the six sons and two daughters.

Children of James Cochran and Janet Burns are:
6. i.   ROBERT14 COCHRAN, b. July 01, 1596, County Donegal, Ireland; d. Calies, Ulster, Ireland.
ii.   JANET COCHRAN, b. Abt. 1597, County Donegal, Ireland; m. JAMES WALLACE; b. Abt. 1608.
  Notes for JANET COCHRAN:
