Notes for ANDREW J. CARROLL: Subject: CARREL -- BRAKE info Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1999 22:37:19 -0700 From: David Byron Varvell <dave@backforty.com> I noticed you miscellaneous census information on the BRAKE family. I am researching an Andrew Jackson Carroll who married a Nancy Jane Brake in Franklin, County, IL on 31 October 1861. Evidently she was about 21. However, I would like to know more about the Andrew J. Carroll. How old was he. Who were his parents or brothers or sisters, etc. Do you know more about Andrew? Please email me a reply. Thanks, Dave dave@BackForty.Com |
| ii. | WALTER F. BRAKE, b. 1842, IL. |
Notes for WALTER F. BRAKE: Walter served in the Civil War, Co. D, 60th Infantry, as a private from Franklin Co., Illinois. His name was spelled Break in the military records. |
| iii. | LOUISA E. BRAKE, b. 1844, IL; d. 1896, Ellis Co., TX; m. JAMES M. WILLET, March 23, 1864, Benton, Franklin Co., IL; b. March 23, 1843, TN (Source: Compiler was Ethel Moore WallaceP.O. Box 208Fresno, TX 77545 (01/09/1984)); d. 1889. |
Notes for LOUISA E. BRAKE: Buried at Bristol in unmarked grave (to right of J. W. & Flora)--others buried over her. 1880 census noted both her parents were born in Tennessee, but that was incorrect. |
Notes for JAMES M. WILLET: Source: 1880 Census--Soundex, Dallas Public Library, Vol. 9, Sheet 32, ED 65, Line 19, Dallas County. Both his father and mother were born in Tenn. and J. M. was a farmer (census). It is thought he & Louiza lived in Snowflake, Ill.--there was a post office there until 1907 (near Benton). Speculation includes, J. M. was blind in one eye from having had a fork thrown at him--perhaps James W. (an "idiot") threw it. Additional speculation comes from a Sonja Willett of Honolulu who said the Willetts originally came from Tenn. & one was a side kick of Daniel Boone. In May 2000, a descendant of the WILLETT line, Shirley Willett <Bantie1@aol.com> wrote that James M. Willett was a son of James W. Willett b. 1810-1815 in Roane Co., TN / Christine (Campbell), who had 4 children - names unknown, 3 girls & 1 son. James W. Willett was son of Enoch Willett / Elizabeth (Ford). Enoch Willett as son of James Willett /Sarah ? Her Internet webpage URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valoudou/. No source/proof was offered for this data. |

| v. | MARANDA TALITHA BRAKE, b. December 31, 1852, Macedonia, Franklin, IL (Source: Buried at Myrtle Cemetery, Ennis, TX); d. July 23, 1932, Ennis, Ellis, TX; m. JASPER HENDERSON FISHER, October 27, 1870, Franklin Co., IL (Source: Married by Minister Hosea Vise in Franklin Co., IL. (marriage record), issued by the State of Illinois, Franklin County.); b. January 29, 1849, Macedonia, Franklin, IL (Source: Listed in family bible as son of Cyrus and Sarah Ann Boyle Fisher. Shown as J. H. Fisher on the 1900 Ellis Co., TX census and on the 1910 Ennis, Ellis Co., TX census.); d. July 19, 1930, Ennis, Ellis, TX. |
Notes for MARANDA TALITHA BRAKE: When Maranda died in 1932, her death certificate was signed by Mrs. S. H. Presley of Houston, TX, who did not know Maranda's mother and father's names. She died at age 80 years, 6 months, and 22 days resulting from senility and loss of mind according to a Dr. Cook, who also signed her certificate (filed with TX Dept. of Health #29558). She was still living at 609 N. Preston, Ennis, TX, at the time of her death. |
Notes for JASPER HENDERSON FISHER: Jasper and Maranda were married by Minister Hosea Vise. About 1888 this family moved from Macedonia, Franklin Co., IL to Ellis County, TX. Maranda's sister, Louisa Brake had married James M. Willett and they had moved to Ellis County previously. Jasper's good friend John L. Webb moved to TX, so this Fisher family took the long trip to TX with their belongings loaded in covered wagons. Arvin Fisher related that Jasper brought the most beautiful, finest looking horses to this TX county. The trip took three months. Two of the little children died and were buried somewhere on the trail. It is believed they are the two unnamed girls in this list of children below. In Texas, they purchased 53 acres in Bristol for $1200.00 where a house had already been constructed for them by their friends. The land was beautiful, on a high hill, and for years it was known as Fisher's Hill. Jasper farmed this land for awhile and in his later years he and Maranda moved to Ennis, TX where they lived the remainder of their lives. Jasper also owned a produce store and covered many miles in the area selling his farm produce. On the 1900 census of Ellis County, TX, a boarder lived with them...Jasper Willett, son of James M. Willett and his wife Louisa Brake. Jasper's sister Gertrude and husband Charley Webb had moved to Texas and were instrumental in Jasper's successful move to Texas. An article about the community of Bristol, TX, written by Mary Mynrose (Brackin) Jones stated that Jasper Fisher was remembered for selling meat and produce in a "Rolling Butcher Shop". It also mentioned Mattie Fisher Webb and G. W. Webb in a list of teachers from 1903-1911. The 1920 Texas Soundex shows Jasper and Maranda living alone at 802 E. Crockett, Ennis, TX. |
