Descendants of Johann Peter Horgodt

Generation No. 2

      2. Johann Henrich2 Herget (Johann Peter1 Horgodt) was born October 31, 1728 in Swabia, Wirtemberg or Darmstadt, Germany1, and died 1803 in Meckleburg Co., NC. He married Nanna Craig? Abt. 1752 in PA?. She was born Abt. 1734, and died Abt. 1810 in Meckleburg Co., NC.

Notes for Johann Henrich Herget:
In "Colonial America, 1607-1789 NC Census Index", the following HARGETT men were listed:
Harget, Peter NC PITT CO. 1762
Hargett, John NC PITT CO. 1764
From WFT Vol. 23 #1430:
The six Hargetts, in chronological order of their arrival in Philadelphia during the years 1737 to 1753, were as follows:
1) Petter [Peter] Hugett. In a list of passengers of "Samuel", Hugh Percy, Master, from Rotterdam, 30 August 1737.
2) Franz Carel Huget. In a list of Palatines in the "Glasgow" Walter Sterling, Commander, from Rotterdam, 9 September 1738.
3) Friedrich Herget. A list from the ship "Edinburg", James Russel, Master from Rotterdam, 8 September 1748.
4) Johan Henrich [Johann Heinrich] Herget. In a list of Foreigners from Swabia, Wirtemberg and Darmstadt, in the ship "Jacob", Capt. Adolph de Grove, from Amsterdam, 2 October 1749. He is the only Hargett among the six in whom we have an interest. Signed oaths of allegiance and abjuration on 02 Oct 1749, to become subject of George II of Englnd. On at least one occasion in later years he signed his name Johann Heinrich Hargett, and finally of 1803 bore the signature Henry Hargett, Sr.
5) Petter [Peter] Hergedt. The ship "Two Brothers", Capt. Thomas Arnot, from Rotterdam, 28 August 1750. He settled in Maryland and is listed in the 1790 & 1800 Census.
6) Johannes Herguth. Ship "Edinburg", Capt. James Russel, from Rotterdam, 14 September 1753.
On the 1800 Mecklenburg Co., NC census, there is a Henry Hergit listed near John and Samuel Stanford.
From Will Smith's homepage http://www.ficom.net/members/wolfslayer/henryharget.html comes this interesting research data: "Johan Henrich Herget - In a List of Foreigners from Swabia, Wirtemberg and Darmstadt imported in the ship Jacob, Capt. Adolph de Grove, from Amsterdam, but last from Shields in England, October 2, 1749, to become subjects of King George II of England." (Strassburger, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, II, 473 (List 140 C). Mr. Smith further wrote: "Johann migrated from Pennsylvania to Anson County, North Carolina by 1754, five years after he landed in Philadelphia. There on July 25, 1754, a son was born to him and his wife, Anna, 'on a branch of the Big Peedee.' (Application of Peter Hargett May 14, 1833 in Kentucky for a pension for his service in Colonel Polk's Mecklenburg Regiment of the North Carolina Line during the Revolutionary War). Anson County had been created from Indian lands in 1748, and adjoined the South Carolina border. The Eastern boundary of the new county extended for some distance up Drowning Creek (now the Lumber River) and then northward to the Virginia Colony, then ran westward without limit, including within its territory the southern half of the states of North Carolina and what is now Tennessee. Johann changed his name to John Henry Hargett. This is proven by a deed conveyance to his son, Joseph Hargett, on September 15, 1797. The deed conveyance states: "Henry Hargett Senior, of the State of North Carolina, and the County of Mecklenburg" conveyed to his son Joseph Hargett 100 acres of land on the north side of Stewart's Fork, 'it being part of the said Henry Hargett's old survey.' He signed this document as 'Johann Heinrich Harget alias Henry Hargett'.
1800 Mecklenburg Co., NC census, listed as Henry Harget Sr, p. 584: 00001; 00001.
On March 28, 1803 his will was signed as shown in Mecklenburg County Wills, 1749-1869, VII Part 1, Folios 1, 3 and 4, North Carolina Department of Archives and History, Raleigh. It was probated July 1803.
