Dennis Heffernan reportedly came from Carrick-on-Suir, in the province of Tipparary, Ireland. He may have been about 12 years old, and in the company of a sister and two brothers, names unknown. His parents were Thomas Heffernan and Margaret Lynch. In 1867, he married Elizabeth Jane Johnston, of Ontario, daughter of James Johnston and Catherine Kerrigan. Dennis was a baker. He and his wife moved to Saginaw, Michigan, and their first three sons were born in Saginaw. Between 1871 and 1873, the family moved back to Ontario, settling in Point Edward, which is near Sarnia. The building where he was a baker still stands. It is now a restaurant called the Bridge Tavern, and is practically under the Blue Water Bridge connecting Sarnia, Ontario with Port Huron, Michigan. John, Charles, and Richard were the first three. Born in Point Edward were Mary Jane (Mae), Catherine Ann (Kate), George, Margaret Ellen, Rose Anne (Auntie Rose), Jennie(Elizabeth J.) who died at age two, and my grandfather, whom I never met, Albert Heffron,Sr. There is a story about how the family name came to be changed from Heffernan to Heffron. It has been said that when Dennis and Elizabeth moved to Saginaw, the name may have been spelled wrong on the deed, and that he never corrected it. Daughter Rose always went by the name of Heffernan, and her obituary lists her as Rose Heffernan. Son George was drowned in a Lake Erie steamer accident. The tale of the ship's ordeal can be found in the book "Ships and Men of the Great Lakes", under the title "Gentlemen, Let Us not be Hasty". There is a story about the main portrait of the family. You will see Mother, Elizabeth, seated holding a picture, probably of George. George died July 29, 1899, and this picture may have been taken shortly after his death. However, someone wanted to include George in the picture. If you look closely at the far right, there is George himself, seated on a chair floating in the air. Cut and paste the old way. This site is new and still in progress. I will make attempts to be accurate. I welcome any additions, stories, and correction of facts. Please email me. Thank you Kathleen Marie (Heffron) Casanova |
