Anthony volunteered for duty during the Civil War, enlisting at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1862. He was assigned to Company K, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry, 162nd Regiment, under Colonel Devin. This unit saw action with General John Buford's Cavalry Division at Gettysburg. He was mustered out in 1865.
