Welcome to the TOMKY/TOMKE Family Home Page! My great great-grandfather, Frederick W. TOMKE, was born in Germany in December 26, 1847. He immigrated to the United States in 1881 or 1882. Frederick TOMKE became a naturalized United States citizen in 1888, and he and his wife, Charlotte (WIECHERT) TOMKE (born in Germany, January 17, 1851), settled in Dolton, Illinois. Upon arrival in the U.S., the spelling of the surname was changed to "TOMKY." Frederick and Charlotte had nine children: Charles F. (b.1872), Herman F. (b.1877), Augusta, Minnie, Ella, Emma, Bertha, Anna, and Fred TOMKY. (My great-grandfather was Herman TOMKY.) Charles and Herman were born in Germany (in or near Leipzig). Family stories claim that Frederick TOMKE was a member of the Prussian army under Kaiser Wilhelm I, and he changed the spelling of his name to prevent the army from locating him in the United States. |
