In an inner courtyard in deep London financial district lays Bevis Mark Synagogue. It’s an amazing building, built in Baroque style with profound Quaker influence in the inside decoration (A Quaker built it), especially the use of dark and strong wood. It’s has two floors, with the upper being for the women. It’s a little copy from the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam.
It’s the oldest Beit Knesset in England (1701), established by the Sephardic Iberian community whose ancestors were expelled from their homeland by the Inquisition and by the political power. It was the religious center for the British Jewry and acted as a support base for “congregational and individual troubles all the world over; e.g., the appeal of the Jamaican Jews for a reduction in taxation (1736); the internecine quarrel among the Barbados Jews (1753); and the aiding of seven-year-old Moses de Paz, who escaped from Gibraltar in 1777 to avoid an enforced conversion.” JewishEncyclopedia.com
It must be an amazing feeling to attend a Kabbalat Shabbat or a Yom Kippur service, and you can feel the History of the place still, and imagine ancient faces looking proud at you, because you survived and you are keeping the blood running.
