Tippin (ancienty, Typpynge) had its origin of the surname from a village or
hamlet in the township of Clayton-le-Dale, situated about five miles northeast
from the city of Blackburn, Lancaster County, England. The mansion house called Tippin Hall, was
the family seat in the time of Edward III (1328-1377) and probably much
earlier.
About the commencement
of the 16th century, the family was divided into two branches. William Tipping of the elder branch was
possessor of Tipping Hall in 1500 A.D. and his son also named William Tipping
moved to Oxford County, England.

where he died. John Hopper died in
1668.

County, North Carolina, to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, the latter part
of 1777 and lived there several years.
He was in the Revolutionary Army in South Carolina as a Lieutenant of
the Militia from June 13, 1782 to July 13, 1782, inclusive, at Orangeburg,
South Carolina. Later he moved to
Pendleton County, South Carolina, now Anderson County, and was there in
1790. He purchased his first farm in
Anderson County, South Carolina in 1793.
He was known locally as Captain John Tippins/Tippen. There is a bridge across one of the streams
near where he lived known as "Tippins Bridge," which is supposed to
be named after him.
A Leander Tippen was
mentioned in John Tippen's will. I do
not know who this is.

Notes for PHILIP TIPPIN:
After the
Revolutionary War, Philip went back to Gerogia and married Mary Underwood about
1784. He was granted 150 acres of land
in Burke County, Gerogia in 1787. The
part of burke he lived in was probably cut off into Jefferson County in 1796,
as his son William Wayne was born in Jefferson County in that year.
On May 7, 1798, Philip
Tippin drew 100 acres of land in Liberty County, Georgia. On February 1, 1802, he drew 200 acres of
land in the same county. This land was
bound on the South by Bull Creek and Conoochee on the North. This land is located about where the town of
Daisy is now. On November 1, 1802,
Philip Tippin drew 250 acres of land in Liberty County which was vacant on all
sides.
After Philip's first
wife died in Tattnal County, Georgia in 1804 he married Nancy Phillips. Philip Tippin died in December of 1826 in
Tattnal County, Georgia at his home on the Cabiichee River. His will was probated February 12, 1827 in
Tattnal County. The location of his
grave was completely lost by 1881 when the DAR failed to locate it to place a
marker over it.
The testator was
buried in what is now called the J.B. Brewton Cemetery near Hogan, Georgia.
