All: Son of James and Mary Coker Born Edgecombe County, NC August 12, 1753 Died December 1, 1818, age 65, while pastor of Bear Creek Baptist Church in Rowan (now Davie) County, NC (See minutes of Bear Creek Baptist Churchfor January 3, 1818). Married Rebecca George (mentioned in the will of Selah George, of Edgecombe County, NC, as a daughter, will dated 1806, May court 1808; some of the grandchildren are mentioned by name). Children: William, Nancy, Lovey, George, Rebecca
All: ********** PAGE 33 ********************************************** In the 1790 Census of North Carolina, Brumbly Coker is at Halifax District, Edgecombe County, NC, with three over 16 years of age and three females ages not stated. These were not all children on Brumbly and Rebecca (George) Coker, as thier children were: William, born May 15, 1786; Nancy, bornDec. 18, 1789; George, born Dec. 23, 1791; Lovery (Lovey), born May 4, 1794; Thomas, born May 16, 1796; and Rebecca, born January 6, 1801. All of these were born in Edgecombe County, except Rebecca, who was born in Rowan (now Davie) County. Thomas Coker died June 21, 1796, in Edgecombe County, NC. Moved to Rowan (now Davie) County, NC April 01, 1799
All: On July 20, 1799, Thomas Allen (no wife signs) lets Brumbly Coker (both of Rowan County) have 162 acres on the waters of Elishas Creek, beginning on the originail corner of a post oak, going east 40 chains and 50 links to a hickory, south 40 chains to a pine, west passing a stake on one side of the original corners (sic) 40 chains and 50 links to a black oak grub on one side of the original corners, then north to the beginning, for 200 Pounds, North Carolina money." (Deed book 17, page 41). It was witnessed by John Powel and Samuel Smith and proved by the latter in November Court, 1800.George inherited all this land in November 1818, except the one third willed to Rebecca (George) Coker, and on October 8, 1819 George Coekr (no wife signs) lets his sister Rebecca's husband, Thomas Owens (Owings) have 162 acres for $980. Witnessed by Nathan O. Hunt and R. Powell and acknowledged by George Coker in May court 1822. (Deed Book 27, Page 67, Rowan County, NC.)
All: On April 5, 1800, Brumbly Coker was ordained to pastorate of Flat Rock (Baptist) Church by Rev. Lazarus Whitehead and Benjamin Buckner. Brumbly Coker and his wife had joined the church by letter the preceeding January. The poor church clerk added " Whence he had come is not known."
All: Through the labors of Cook, Angel, Whitehead and the Rev. Brumbly Coker there were enough Baptists in easternIredale County, some ten to twelve miles northeast of Statesville, for organization of an independent body. They constituted a church by the name of New Hope, and it joined the Yedkin Assosiation in 1802.
All: Eaton's Baptist Church of the Yedkin Assosiation, located at what is now Cana, in Davie County, was pastored by Rev. Brumbly Coker from 1805 to the end of 1814, when having difficulty with one of the members of his church, even though exonerated by an able committee of helps from sister churches, he gave up the pastorate early in 1815. He was Moderator of the "Yadkin assosiation from 1812-13 and from 1815 until hisdeath in December 1817. *** PAGE 34 ******* Some volume copies of the early records of the minutes of the Bear Creek Church, Davie County, NC are on fileat the Davie County Library in Meckaville, show how busy and harrassed a poor moderator and Pastor must have been, always busy having to set people and churches in order. (Note: I, Wetaunah Ann Coker, made hand written copies of the church notes, but did not add them in here) The final entry is the saddest of all. "Jan. the 3d, 1818. The Revrend Brumbly Coker a pastor of the church at Bear Creek was born August 12, 1753 Departed this life Davidson Co.
