209. Sarah Jane⁷ Webb (Jason L.⁶, Benjamin⁵, James⁴, John³, John², Robert¹) was born December 31, 1871 ¹⁷⁴, and died December 01, 1943 in Wheelwright, Floyd County, KY¹⁷⁴. She married Wilson "Wilse" Franklin July 22, 1890 in Letcher County, KY ¹⁷⁵, son of Andrew Franklin and Manerva Sergent. He was born April 26, 1872 ¹⁷⁶, and died March 06, 1959¹⁷⁶.

"Sarah Jane Franklin"

Sarah Jane Franklin, aged 70 years passed away in Wheelwright, Ky., Dec. 1, 1943. Mrs. Franklin was the wife of Wilson Franklin and the mother of five sons and five daughters, all well-known citizens of Letcher County. Funeral services will be held at the Mayking Regular Baptist Church, Dec. 4th, 1943, with Rev. G. Bennett Adams and others officiating. Burial in the Webb Cemetery, Mayking, Ky.
Among the Franklin children left to survive are Andrew and Leroy of Whitesburg, Doc Franklin of Sergent and other whose names we were unable to learn.
Mrs. Franklin is a sister of N. M. Webb, former editor of The Eagle and John S. Webb, former Whitesburg citizen.

"Aunt Sarah Jane Franklin"

Another good mother has passed on - forever gone from earth and earthly cares. Her voice is now silent, and she now sleeps that sweet peaceful sleep that only the Lord can give to his beloved. Aunt Sarah Jane Franklin today has passed from earth to glory, from cares to heavenly bliss, from suffering and pain to perfect rest. She's safe at home at last, freed from all the cares, pains and heartaches of this life.
She was born December the 31st, 1871 and was one among a family of 18 children of the late well-known citizen Jason L. Webb, who spent his entire more than 90 years in the environs of Sergent, Ky., and who was one of the leading citizens in the building up of this great mountain section and belonged to the old Webb family, being kin to all the early settlers who came here. Her mother was the late Loudemia Hubbard Webb daughter of Eld. R. S. Hubbard, pioneer Baptist minister of the Virginia section. Today 7 of her family of brothers and sisters still survive her, their ages ranging from 55 to 77 and they are as follows: N. M. of Whitesburg, founder and publisher of The Mountain Eagle for many years; Sam T. of Lincoln County; Robert of Los Angeles; W. B. of Sergent; John S. of Whitesburg; Lettie Salling and Walter of Sergent.
Many years ago she was married to Wilson Franklin of the Colly section and to this union were born 13 children - three having preceded her in death, Robert, N. M. and one little infant daughter - ten still survive her as follows: Dock B. of Sergent, well-known merchant of that section; Andrew K. of Whitesburg; Monroe of Lexington; John in the U.S. Navy; Lettie Belle Blair of Colly; Maggie Crissilus of Williamsburg; Lora Hartt of California, Mary Polly of Detroit and Mattie Hall of Wheelwright and these with 37 grandchildren; 13 great grand children and 1 great great grand child and hundreds of other relatives and friends grieve her passing.
Seven of her grandsons are in the service, some of them being now at the battlefront. And while her family and friends are saddened because of her going, yet they can be comforted by the great Faith and Patience exhibited by her in life - she was afflicted for many months - no earthly cure could be found - doctors were powerless - but during it all she always looked higher than earth to the greatest of all Physicians and in that faith smiled. She expressed the greatest sweetness and humbleness throughout all her afflictions - and the gleam of that Christ like love - shined radiant like above it all. Some 11 years ago she professed faith in Christ, was baptized with her baby daughter and lived an humble Christian life to the end. December the 1st, 1943, a day that will be long remembered by her family - brought an end to her earthly stay - for on that Wednesday morning - early - she sweetly closed her eyes and whispering "Give me My Jesus" and earth was no more - her tired, worn out spirit - renewed by the graciousness of the Saviour moved out of a worn out body - and with the company of angels went to live forever with her Christ. Many times she said "I want to go". She bid her children goodbye - and quietly and peacefully the end came. Aunt Jane Franklin is at rest today - and the afflictions of this life are over and may the life she lived be as a light house to her family - to look to - to follow and to help them in this life - when discouraged - when troubled to look as she did to the one who never fails-the Lord Jesus Christ. Benjamin's middle initial is quite often listed as 'R', but according to an e-mail received on 24 Mar 2005 from Mitzi Mullins Smith, she states that it should be 'B'. An excerpt from her message is as follows:

"I also noticed that you have him listed as Benjamin R. Webb but his grandaughter my gr Aunt said his name was Benjamin B. Webb and the only Benjamin R. was b. in 1819, she is the last living grandchild of Benjamin and gr grandchild of Miles that I know of still living, of course she is up in age and is getting quite feeble."

The following article is from The Mountain Eagle newspaper dated 3/7/40, page 1, column 7:

"Big Nelt Webb Will Be Eighty Tuesday, March 12"

Mr. N. R. Webb (known to his many friends as Big Nelt) of Mayking, came in Monday to renew his subscription to The Mountain Eagle. Mr. Webb will be an octogenarian on next Tuesday, March 12th, when he will celebrate his eightieth birthday. All smiles and in perfect health for a man of his age, Mr. Webb had many interesting things to tell us.
He states that he is the son of the late Miles M. Webb and Mary Holbrook Webb, and lives in the house built by his father about eighty-five years ago. He has two sisters, Mrs. Lettie Chisenall, 75 years old, and lives at Wise, Va., and Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Gibson, 85 years old, who lives in Whitesburg.
On Nov. 9, 1882, Mr. Webb married Miss Catherine Spangler of Mayking, and after 57 years of married life he still says she is the prettiest woman in Letcher county and that letting him be the Judge she will win the prize in any beauty contest. He and his faithful companion have raised ten children, nine of whom are still living - five boys and five girls: Lindsey, Wash (deceased), Watson, John Harrison and Herbert Woodrow who has been in the Army for several years; Mrs. Callie Webb, Mrs. Burdie Webb Craft, Mrs. Polly Ellen Bates, Mrs. Sabrinia Williams and Mrs. Elsie V. Blair.
Mr. Webb taught school in Jenkins in 1882 (at that time Pike County) and also Floyd and Letcher counties. He says he believes he has more teacher's certificates than any man in Letcher County. Teachers got very little money for their services while he was a teacher.
Mr. Webb states that he was born March 12, 1860, and that his wife was born July 13, 1868, making him 8 years, 4 months and one day older than she. He and his wife are strong Democrats, members of the Regular Baptist church and use the Bible as a guide. He says he owns his own home and land and that he does not owe any man a dime and that he has never deeded his property over to some one else in order to try to beat his debts.
Mighty good life you've lived Mr. Webb, only wish we and all others could do as well.
