Notes for Allen Webb:
The following is an excerpt from an e-mail written by Rose (Holcomb) Lewis, granddaughter of Allen and Rebecca (Caudill) Webb, daughter of Willie and Nancy (Webb) Holcomb, in response to my e-mail asking her what she knew about her grandfather, Allen Webb:

From: "Rose Lewis"
To: "Brian K. Caudill"
Subject: Re: Allen Webb
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 17:25:05 -0500

Brian, don't know much. He left home when Aunt Mary was about 9 months old--so guess late 1911. Mom said they later heard he had gone to Arkansas settled somewhere on the Little Red river and changed his name to Brown. He had been in Arkansas earlier with his sister Mary Alice (married to Leslie "bud" Brown) and their family. This was also according to uncle Jay (Leslie) Webb. They also heard he had another family. There is also a rumor, that Allen wrote grandmother Webb after about 5 years and said if she would send the money he would come home. Grandmother was supposed to have sold timber and sent him $100. He never showed up. Sometime after that he wrote again and said if she would sell the farm, and send him the money he would come and get her and the family. Thankfully, (if this is true) grandmother had too much sense. Apparently, when she told the story she would say "and if I had sold the farm and sent him the money what home would I have now) or something like that. Don't know if this is true, mom never said anything about it to me. Mom did tell me that she remembered the day he left. She thought he was going for a walk and she wanted to go with him. She held on to his leg and followed him to the gate begging to go. He said not this time little girl, you'll have to stay home. She never saw him again. Mom always thought that Aunt Mary Alice Brown knew where he was. If so, I don't understand why she died without ever telling the family. For that matter, if the above is true, looks like grandmother had to have an address to reply to unless she sent it through someone else.
