Both of our families enjoyed their privacy and tried to shun any public notice. - They were very successful!!! - After almost eight years of trying to trace them, we have finally determined the approximate years that they left Ireland, but we canít place them in Ireland. Perhaps some distant cousin will recognize some familiar names or relationships and we can share our discoveries.

(Birth dates and, in some cases, birth places are noted after the names)

The CAWLEYS (McCaulay or McCauley):-
The names, Cawley and McCaulay, have been used interchangeably on official records found in England. In some copies, it appears to be McCauley.
Thomas Cawley (c1843, Ire) was the son of Michael Cawley. He married Bridget Culkin (c1845, Ire), daughter of Martin Culkin, in York, England - Jan. 1867.
Their children: Mary (1870), Ellen (c1872), Martin (c1875), Ann/Amy (c1877), Bridget (c1879), Margaret (1881), Michael (1886).
All of the children except Ann/Amy emigrated to the US, who remained in England. We know she had one son who was killed in WW II while serving in the RAF. Mary lived in Philadelphia.
Michael was the last to leave England (1900); he, Martin and Margaret settled in western Pennsylvania.
They are believed to have originally lived in County Sligo, and family lore says that Michael Cawley and Martin Culkin were executed in Ireland and their families then transported to England.

The MC DONALDS:-
Patrick McDonald (c1833, Ire) married Mary Lamb (c1840, Ire), presumably in Ireland.
Based on the birth places of their children, they must have emigrated between 1855 and 1858.
They settled in New York City, and in both the 1869 NYC Directory and the 1870 US Census, they lived at 32 Oak Street.
Their children: Elizabeth (c1855, Ire), Margaret (c 1858 NYC), Peter (1860-1926), Edward (c1863), Teresa (c1866), James (c1868), Ellen (c1869).

His son, Peter, married Bridget Forrest (1867-1931 NYC), daughter of Robert (c1820, Ire) and Mary Flynn (c1830, Ire) Forrest. NYC directory (1869) and US Census (1870) list them
at 28 Oak Street. NYC Directory (1890) has them listed at 32 Oak Street. According to 1900 US Census, they had eight children, but only Bridget had survived. They arrived in NYC on the Harvest Queen, 18 May 1863.
Other known children: Robert, Elizabeth - both born Ire.

Peter McDonald (c1830, Ire) married Margaret ? (c1835, Ire). He is presumed to be Patrickís brother. They also lived at 32 Oak Street (US Census, 1870).
Their children: Mary (c1853, NYC), Ellen (c1857), James (c1859), Owen (c 1863), Elizabeth (c1867).

It is believed that either the McDonald-Lamb couple or the Forrest-Flynn couple originally came from County Armagh or County Louth (Dundalk)
