|CAWEIN NAME HISTORY
The surname Cawein originated in Germany sometime in the fourteenth century and may have come from the German word for money-changer or foreign merchant "ka(u)werzen". The name may also have referred to a person who came from the city of Cahors located in southern France which was then known as the seat of money-changers.
The profession of money-changer was called Kawerschen and was mentioned in 1324 for the first time. In Germany, however, the surname Cawein is only found in small numbers.
