Notes for J
John (Johannes) Shaffer was born in 10 June 1755 in Berks County, Pa (according to his Rev War Records ) and moved to the Shenandoah while a small boy. He married Eve Kelknar in 1778, a neighbor of the family. They lived and owned property in various counties including Wythe and Washington counties in Virginia. He served as a private in the Revolutionary War and was drafted in 1780 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He served a total of ten months under the command of Capt. Jacob Benewit, Capt Lawrence Snapp, Capt. Joseph Hawkins and Capt. All whose company joined the army near Williamsburg and with his army went to Yorktown. After becoming dangerously ill at Yorktown he was discharged shortly before the surrender of Cornwallis in 1781. John was a German Lutheran and active in church affairs. He was connected with three churches, St. John's, St. Paul's and Kimberling in Wythe County, Va. They moved to "Wytheville sometime after he was discharged from the war as most of their children were born there. He was considered well off in his day and was a large landowner, being in possession of hundreds of acres of land. They moved to Washington County, Va around 1795 where he built his church known as Shaver's or Zion Lutheran Church in 1811. After Eve died in the spring of 1830, John gave or sold to each of his six sons a farm. John was the only one who wrote his name in Deutsch German script. He took turns living with his sons George and Samuel. According to court records in Washington County, George treated his father very badly and took all of John's money and property. In 1851, Samuel took his brother George to court regarding his father's estate. In 1853, Samuel applied to the War Department to receive money due him on his father's service during the Rev War. John spent the last years of his life in the home of his son Samuel. John died in 1847 of the 'Gravill' and was buried in the church yard of the Zion Lutheran Church in Sullivan County, Tenn. His grave is marked with a tombstone erected by the DAR in the 1940's. It reads "John Shaffer-Tennessee-PVT-Benewits Va Co.-Rev War-April 27, 1847"

Notes for F
Frederick, also called John George Frederick Shaffer, the son of Jacob Shaffer, also lived on Reed Creek on a tract of 160 acres purchased from Henry Bird in 1798. Frederick and his wife Barbara conveyed the same land to Robert Crockett and his wife Jane in 1805, and appear to have left the area. Frederick is the "Potter" mentioned in a store account book at Fort Chiswell and in road orders (Wythe County Deed Book 2, pg 166, Bk 4, pg 98 ; Fort Chiswell Store Accounts)

Frederick Shaffer served in the Rev War, Virginia Company, 2 years 9 mo's, Woodstock, Va under Capt. Thos Kirk & Col Campbell, Oct 15, 1779. During a leave he returned home and found his father ill. He was permitted to remain at home by furnishing a substitute to finish his term of enlistment. He was discharged at Charlestown, SC in 1782. His son Benjamin stated (in his Rev War records at DAR Library in Washington DC) that he was 100 years and 5 days old at his death in 1855. He was allowed pension on July 24, 1833 while a resident of Greene County, Tennessee. At that time he stated his age was 75 years. (that would make his birth year 1757). A land warrant application April 30, 1855 lists his age as 97. Both these documents were filed and signed by him. (that would also make his birth year 1757). In 1848 he moved to Clinton Co. Indiana to be with his children. He died at the home of his youngest son Benjamin A. Shaffer on Dec 18, 1855 in Warren Township, County of Clinton, Indiana. He lived with Benjamin for 26 years. At the Grays Cemetery, Middleford, Indiana, his tombstone reads " 18 Dec 1855, 100y and 5d" (some confusion as to the real birth year of Frederick)
