1. GEORGE1 GARLAND was born in Germany, and died 1825 in Fulton County, Pennsylvania. He married ELIZABETH FRIEND Abt. 1785, daughter of NICHOLAS FRIEND and MARIA. She was born Abt. 1769.

EORGE GARLAND:
! "George Garland came to America with the king's army duringthe
revolutionary war, and served throughout the contest. After the warh e went to Germany for his wife. She was bound out to serve forsevera l years, to pay her passage money. Mr. Garland settled on WhiteOak r un, in Bethel, on land now owned by Henry L. Garland, where hedied ab out 1825. His children were Nicholas, Jacob, Susan, George,Catharine , David, Rachel, and Elizabeth- all now dead but Rachel.George Garlan d, son of George, Sr., was born and reared in Betheltownship on the o ld homestead. In 1835 he bought out the rest of theheirs, paying tw o hundred and sixty dollars for two hundred and fiftyacres. He die d in 1870. His wife (nee Mary Hill) is living, aged 72.They reared ei ght children, six of whom are living. Lemuel Garlandfollowed daily l abor and school-teaching until 1867, when he purchaseda farm of two h undred and twelve acres in Belfast township. Hemarried Harriet Trua x in 1857. Mr. Garland served one term as countyauditor. He was ele cted to that office in 1871."

! "George Garland came to America with the King's Army during the Re volutionary War and served through-out the contest. He was a Major i n the Revolutionary War under General George Washington, (19 April 17 75/ 3 September 1783). After the war he went to Germany for his wife . She was bound out for several years to pay for her passagemoney . George served in the Border war of 1816. George Garland came to A merica about 1774/1775.
"George Garland settled on White Oak Run in Bethel Township, in F ulton County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Friend, the oldes t daughter of Nicholas and Maria Elizabeth Friend. They were the par ents of twelve children, their names and dates of birth were taken fr om the original pages of the Garland Family Bible. Copies of these p ages will be found on the following pages.
"George Garland pledged allegiance to the Province of Pennsylvani a at the Bedford County courthouse on 7 July 1777.
"George Garland's will was made in 1827 and recorded in 1829.
"The 1790 census of Bethel Township has George Garland with one m ale over 16 (George), one male under 16 (Nicholas) and two females (E lizabeth and Martha Ann)."
