William Edward Chapman was born November 18, 1870, the eldest of seven sons of Benjamin Salmon Chapman and Samantha Marie Bratton. When Will was eight, his parents took him to Saline County, Nebraska to live, but he was never happy there. He returned to Iowa at fifteen, working on farms in the area, and living with his Grandparents or his Uncle Fred.

Will married Olive May Smart September 2, 1891, in Marengo, Iowa, in a double ceremony with Will's Uncle, Joe Chapman, and Olive's cousin, Mary Owen. After their marriage, Will & Olive lived in an old hotel building in North English, IA. The next spring, Will worked on a farm for $16 a month.

Will and Olive had nine children.

Will and Olive took a trip to Nebraska, with the kids, to visit Will's parents. They crossed the Missouri River on a flat boat. Olive was not well thought of by Will's parents, so she and the kids stayed with the wagon while Will walked down the long lane to visit with his parents. On the return trip to Iowa, Walter decided to walk across the railroad tressle over the river. Before he got completely across, a train approached. He ran, and jumped off the end of the tressle, injuring himself in the process.

During the journey homeward, they saw a red rooster strutting along the road. They tried to catch it, but it ran into a farmer's yard. They told the farmer that they were trying to catch it, and that it ran away from them. The farmer helped them catch it, and they had chicken dinner.

Will was said to order a green leaf of tobacco, and keep it in a cigar box. When he wanted to smoke, he would pull off a chunk and put it in a pipe. He also used corn silk when money got tight.

Grandson Eugene Dicks was said to visit grandad Will's farm. Will taught him to harness a team of horses so that grandma Olive could go to town.

Olive died October 18, 1939. In 1945, Will retired and moved to Delta, IA. Will then married Leona Dollie West Lacy. This marriage didn't last long. They soon divorced. In 1958, Will entered a nursing me in Sigourney, IA. He walked with two canes. He died December 10, 1965 at the age of 95.
