Notes for Melvin Dicks: When he was young, Melvin worked for Lert and Ivy Sellers on their farm near What Cheer, IA. It was on this farm that Melvin met a pretty girl, Gladys Mary Chapman, Ivy Sellers' sister. Melvin and Gladys were married December 15, 1915. They had seven children. A story was told about Melvin when he and Gladys were living in Tilton, IA, and Gladys was expecting her sixth child, Betty. Melvin and Uncle Floyd Dicks had been digging a well on the property by hand. They hit a rock, and could not proceed, so they tied a rope around Robert's ankles, who was three at the time. They lowered him into the hole, head first, to retrieve the rock. When Gladys found out, she flew into a rage! Melvin began carrying the mail Feb 1, 1923 at Tilton, IA. In 1932, the family then moved to Gibson, IA. In 1935, Melvin then transferred to Columbus Junction, Iowa. He retired Nov 30, 1961 after carrying mail for 38 years, 10 months. Melvin built a house in Columbus Junction in 1952. He wanted to build a garage, so he tore down the old Cairo, IA schoolhouse, transporting the old boards by car to his house, and he built his garage using this lumber. Melvin had an accident in 1953 or 54, which left him crippled the rest of his life. He got around on crutches, but was very self-sufficient. After his retirement, Melvin and Gladys built a new house in Washington, IA. Melvin died March 5, 1963. Gladys died May 20, 1994. They are buried in the cemetery in Columbus City, Iowa. |
