Wrote on the back of her picture, she lost her sight in Lowell Kansas managed to get back to Iowa via covered wagon. Oldest child was 16 or 17 her husband shot himself in Kansas because he suffered so with cancer. Susan Hayes was born in Rock Island County IL, Oct. 20, 1849, the daughter of Samuel Aca (should be Asa) of Ohio and Susan Truxel (should be Hannah Susan Troxel) of Illinois. She was married to Daniel Hayes at Rock Island IL, about 60 years ago. Surviving are eight children, Mrs. Louise Hatton of Detroit Michigan, Mrs. Mattie Bierman, Mrs. Bessie Daughtery and Mrs. Mary Howard all of Muscatine; John, Daniel, and Edward Hayes of Muscatine, Wilson Hayes of Little Falls Minnesota. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals by the Rev. Ira Hawley, pastor of the United Brethren church. I June Brewer Welsch have a copy of her marriage incense which was gotten in Muscatine her name was spelt Susan Asa. Susan was a sister to my (June Brewer Welsch) great grandmother Nancy Elizabeth Asa Brewer. She was in the 1900 Drury Township, Rock Island County Illinois Census; Susan Hayes wd. age 34 b. IL both parents b. IL, John H. son 27 married 1 year b. IL, Elizabeth daughter in-law 17 b. IA, Wilson son 23 b. IL, Bessie daughter 17 born Kansas, Mary Ann daughter 13 b. Kansas, Daniel 9 b. Kansas, Charlie E. son 7 born KS. There sure is something wrong with this Census as according to this Census Susan would of only been 7 years old when she had John. She was in the 1910 Muscatine County Iowa Census as; Susan Hays 67 born IL, and both parents born IL, Edward son 19 born KS, and both parents born IL, Daniel son 21 born KS, occupation Housemover, Martha daughter inlaw 21 born IA, Arthur grandson 8 months born IA. I found a certificate for marriage for Susan Alva Hays (should be Hayes) and Edward Jones he was 55 and she was 34 it was a second marriage for both of them her father was Samuel Asay and mother Tristeed (Troxell) this last name was hard to make out. The date of marriage was July 8, 1898. Edward Jones parents were James Jones and ? Houser |

Tuesday after an illness since March 31 of this year with a complication of ailments. She was born Sept. 12, 1886 in Kansas, residing in Drury township before coming to Muscatine 12 years ago, she was married to Alva W. Howard on July 22, 1902 at Rock Island. Mrs. Howard was a member of the Pine Bluff Methodist Episcopal church. Surviving are her husband; six children Florence Estabrook, Lorence Howard both of Muscatine, Wesly and Omar Howard of Illinois, Laura Lessman of Rock Island and Kenneth Howard at home, three brothers John, Daniel, and Wilson Hayes all of Muscatine, three sisters Bessie Dougherty and Mattie Johnson both of Muscatine, and Fannie Hatton of Detroit Michigan, seven grandchildren. He had been a resident of Muscatine for the past 37 years. Mr. Howard was first married to Mary Ann Hayes and later to Ida Boden. Both of these wifes preceded him in death. He was married Oct. 7, 1945 at Muscatine to Lydia M. Forbes. He was of the Methodist faith. He is survived by his wife Lydia Howard at home, four sons Omer S. Howard, Lorence E. Howard, Wesley A. Howard and Kenneth W. Howard all of Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. W. R. Estabrook of Muscatine, and Mrs. Floyd Lessman of Rock Island; 23 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and his first two wifes. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the George Wittich Funeral home, with Rev.
