Generation No. 2

2. DOROTHEA4 CHAPMAN (ROBERT3, THOMAS2, JOHN1) was born 1860, and died December 05, 1932. She married SAMUEL T. WRIGHT.

Notes
IRISH FAMILY SETTLED

Mr. Samuel Wright, Sr., came from Belfast, Ireland to Canada many years ago. He was born in 1861. (1861-1932).
His wife, the former Dorothy Chapman, came from Donegal, Ireland. They met here in Canada and married.
Prior to purchasing the Long Branch Park property in 1905, at a cost of $10,000, Sam Wright, Sr. had engaged in the milk business, raised cattle and had been a wholesale producer.
Samuel Wright, Sr. was Past President, Ward Six, Conservative Association, West York and President of the Long Branch Conservative Association. He was also a member of Etobicoke Council for three terms. He was a Presbyterian and an Orangeman, Past Master of Doric Lodge, A.F. and A.M.
Mr. and Mrs. Wright Sr., had three sons; Harold Wright, George and Samuel T., as well as two daughters, Mrs. H. Trimble of Walkerton and Mrs. Fred Watson of Dixie.
Mr. Cornell purchased sixty acres south of the Lake Shore Road from the Eastwood family about 1890 for a Summer resort. Johnny Owe, a contractor from Toronto Gore, was commisioned to build the Sea Breeze, or as it later became known, the Long Branch Park Hotel. The park was subdivided for cottages and the nucleus of a summer community was formed. A merry-go-round, roller coaster, ponies and other attractions were added for picnickers. A pier was built and soon excursion steamers such as the Greyhound owned by the Gooderhams, the White Star, Prince Rupert and J.W. Steinhoff were bringing pleasure seekers from the Queen's Wharf in Toronto. The hotel even had it's own power-generating plant! After many years the Wilkie brothers went to California and the amusements were believed to have been sent to Port Dalhousie. A fire destroyed the Park Hotel.
Long before the hotel, ships visited Long Branch. As early as 1837, John Hamilton's Royal Mail Line, which offered the only through service from Hamilton to Montreal without trans-shipment, and other vessels would put into Long Branch, Duck's Bay, Port Credit, Anchorage Farm or wherever business called them.

Notes
THOMAS ANDREW and RICHARD'S arrival in Australia.
In the year 1889 they boarded the "Merkera" at London, arriving in Maryborough 29th June 1889. Records show them as single labourers who could read and write, from Armagh, and that they passed through Bundaberg on route to their brother in Eidsvold. Their father had died in 881, mother early 1889. Maybe there had been problems at home or they just wanted to see brother John. Their two sisters had gone to Canada, probably ca 1884-1886.

Obituary: Mr. Thos. A. Chapman
OLD RESIDENT OF EIDSVOLD
Friends throughout the Burnett district will be sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Thomas A. Chapman, one of the oldest continuous residents of the Eidsvold goldfield.
the brief information received simply states that Mr. Chapman died in the Eidsvold Hospital on Friday last.
Mr. Tom Chapman, with his brothers, John and Richard, arrived in Queensland from County Armagh, Ireland, about the year 1888, and Eidsvold being then in the gold boom they were attracted to the spot.
Although the brothers engaged in mining pursuits their minds were bent on going on the land, and they were possessors of land grant orders, for limited areas, issued to immigrants who came to Queensland under certain conditions.
BECAME A SETTLER
Mr.T. Chapman married early and secured a selection on the pretty piece of
plain country five miles northerly from Eidsvold. Here he made a comfortable
home, tilled a large portion of his area, and reared a family who have become
good citizens.
Awaiting payable results from his farm he became a carrier, conveying goods
from the railway terminus at Mt. Perry to Eidsvold, and other portions of the
Upper Burnett. He took a fairly large interest in immediate district affairs, and
in every respect was regarded as a good neighbour and citizen.
Mr. John Chapman went north and became interested in newspaper work at
Charters Towers, and for a period became enamoured in politics. He returned
to the Burnett a few years ago, but unfortunately met with a riding accident
which ended fatally.
GRAZING AND SUGAR
The younger brother, Mr. Richard A. Chapman, fired, from the day of his setting
foot on Queensland soil, with a desire to become a landed proprietor, after
taking unto himself a better half, went on the land just outside Mt. Perry,
gradually increasing his original holding until he held quite a large area of
grazing country.
A couple of years back he disposed of this property and purchased a sugar
farm at Currajong, Gin Gin. He is one of the first board of directors of the
locally owned Gin Gin Sugar Mill, and is counted amongst the progressive
men in the district.
Sympathy will be extended to Mrs. T. A. Chapman and the members of the
family in the loss they have sustained.

THOMAS ANDREW CHAPMAN. by Vince Chapman

Thaomas Andrew worked in the Eidsvold gold fields for a number of years.
After the mines closed he joined the few teamsters who transported stores
from Munduberra, Mt. Perry to Eidsvold shops, hotels and district. Their
tabletop wagons were drawn by ten corn-fed draft horses. Getting stores to
outlying stations in the early days, when the roads were a mere two wheel
tracks through the bush, especially in the wet season, can be left to one's
imagination.
In the eighteen hundreds, if young men immigrated from Ireland to Australia
and paid their own way, they received a government grant of 160 acres of
good freehold land to settle, if so desired. Thomas selected one of these
blocks, which he called "Glenview". It was situated about nine miles NE of
Eidsvold on the old Mt. Perry road. He cleared the good brigalow scrub and
built a home, yardsets and cultivated lucern and corn, which was grown to feed
his horses.
He continued with the carrying business until the railway line was laid to
Monto. This was a great boom to all except the teamsters, whose livelihood
came to an end.
He then joined the gangs fencing in the railway, and stone pitching bridge
ends, at which he was a past master. He continued this life until he became
very ill, and had to retire from any kind of work. He died at the age of 63.
