PROOF & TIMELINE:
VIRGINIA - He lived first in Spotsylvania Co; then Buckingham Co; Then Henry Co by 1766; his property became Franklin Co in 1786; then he moved to or his land became Montgomery Co in 1798 where he died after Feb. 1811. His son John remained there and his property became Floyd Co, in 1831.

----1760, August -1764, August, Bailey is apprenticed out to JOHN WALLER JR. in Spotsylvania Co. for 4 years, probably until he reaches 21 years of age. He's apprenticed as a shoemaker, and taught to read and write. This family shows alot of importance in reading and writing. I believe his father may be John Carter, secretary of the colony, or John's brother George who died in 1751 in Spotsylvania County. This is the only Carter family in that county at this time. John was also a constable, and a vestryman for St. Georges Parish in Spotsylvania. John worked side by side with John Waller Sr. and John Waller Jr.; "Apprentices of Virginia 1623-1800"/Harold Gill pg 41 shows the apprenticeship dates, names, county, type of apprentice. I have a copy of the original;
----1762 Henry Co, Bailey was a soldier in French & Indian War; Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Vol 9, pg 417 shows July 27, 1780 Bailey Carter made oath that he served as a soldier in 1762 in Henry Co. in Col. Adam Stephen's Co.; He hadn't finished his apprenticeship, so he may have only been about 19 yrs. old.;
----1764 Buckingham Co Tithes - "Gen. records of Buckingham Co, VA"/Edythe Whitley pg 5, Bailey Carter, 1 tithe; Joseph Carter 1 tithe and 100 acres; George Carter 1 tithe; (probably brothers);
----1765, May 31 - Spotsylvania Co. Deed book F, pg 560 - John Waller & wife Elizabeth sell 200 acres to John Carter, Gent land that bounds John Carters land, a Mr. Chews land; Larken Chew testified to the sale; The name John Waller comes up quite often with John Carter. That is why I suspect John is Bailey's father. Also Bailey named his son John, many name a son after their father.
----1773 Buckingham Co Tithes - "Gen. records of Buckingham Co, VA"/Edythe Whitley pg 28; "buckingham Co, VA Church & Marriage Records 1764-1822"/Mary Warren pg 6; "Virginia's District courts 1789-1809"/Mary Warren pg 427; George Carter 2 tithes; Joseph Carter 2 tithes; Stephen Carter 1 tithe;
----1774 Buckingham Co tithes - 'Same references as above' - Bailey Carter included with Asop Walker 3 tithes (could this be his brother/father-in-law?); John Carter including Huddleston Carter 2 tithes; George Carter 1 tithe; Joseph Carter 1 tithe; Stephen Carter 1 tithe;
----1774 April 16 - "The virginia Genealogist" Vol 6, #1 pg 62 - British Mercantile Claims, Treaty of Peace of 1783 provided for the settlement of debts owed British merchants. Bailey Carter judgement at Cumberland Store, issued, assets not found. Several executions has previously been issued and returned no effects.
----1777, Oct 31,- Henry Co. - Bailey took oath of allegiance; Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Vol 9, pg 14 - shows Bailey took oath of allegiance in Oct. 31, 1777 in Henry County;
----1778-1780- Taxes in Henry Co., "1778-1780 Tax Lists of henry co, VA"/Lela Adams, listed are Bailey, Baynes, Joseph, Josiah, George & David Carter.
----1780, July 27 - "Virginia's Colonial Soldiers"/Lloyd Bockstruck lists Henry Co., pg 254, Bounty Land applications, Bailey Carter filed for bounty land because he served as a soldier in col Adam Stephen's company in 1762 in French and Indian War.

----1783, Mar 29,- Henry Co, Deed from Bailey Carter to John Oakes both of Henry Co 100 acres on Nicholas Creek wit: Joseph & John Carter (probable brothers). "abstracts of Henry Co, Va, Deed Books 1&2"/Lela Adams pg 122;

----1785 Henry Co, property taxes - Bailey Carter, Constable &1 tythe (means he is free from 1 tythe for being constable, 1 male tythe total, 1 under 21(son John); (keep in mind the John Carter I believe is his father was also a constable among other Civil offices)
----1785, Oct. 27 - Bailey signed a petition to split Henry County and form a new county named Franklin, Rowland Salmons and Joel Walker also signed "The Virginia Genealogist Vol 24, #2, " pg 192;
----Did not find either Bailey or John in Henry county taxes from 1786 onward because their property became Franklin Co now, and sure enough

----1787, June - Franklin co. Bailey Carter is replaced by others as constable and road overseer; "An Old Virginia Court of Franklin County"/Marshal Wingfield, pg 74;
----1787 Franklin co, personal property tax Bailey Carter, 1 tithe, 3 horse, 16 cattle; next to him is John Carter, 1 tithe, 1 horse; (Bailey had 4 horses the year before, now John is on his own and has 1 horse)

----1794, Oct 6, - Frnaklin co, - Bailey signed as witness to land laid off to Wm. Thorps widow;
----1795, Mar 12 - Franklin Co - I believe Frankey (Frances) b.1768 is also a daughter or sister because she married in Franklin Co. to Rowland Salmons and named her son Bailey Carter Salmons. (She may be the witness along with Bailey of deed in 1787 from Joseph to John Carter)
----1795, Nov 19, - Franklin Co, - John Carter (son) married Fanny McCutcheon.
----1796, Feb 25 - Franklin co, - Phoebe Carter (probable daughter married Samuel McCutcheon). "Marriage Bonds of Franklin co"/Wingfield pg 155, states: Phoebe Carter m/Samuel McCutcheon, Sur. NOTES:
----I suspect John is father of Bailey because Bailey named his son John, and then in turn, John named his first born son Bailey which many name first born son after their fathers.
-----someone filed DAR Application approved Feb. 7, 1998, says she had bible record?
---- Nancy Carter (daughter of Bailey) m. Wm. Stinnett 7-13-1789 in Franklin co, VA.
William P. Carter b. 1827 Barren Co.KY married Lucetta Stinnett Feb 21, 1856 in Barren co, KY; I wonder if they are related because Bailey's gr-grandson Henry Carter and David V. Carter went and lived in Barren co, KY, and there was another Henry Carter family in Barren co, KY that were born in Virginia;
Mary Jane Carter m. Tilghman Stinnett Oct 19, 1852 in Botetourt Co, VA. Her father was a Joseph carter.
Littleberry Carter m. Nancy Stinnett before 1848. He died in 1870 in Bedford co, VA.
----In the book "over the mountain men"/Anne Lowry Worrell, it lists Nancy Carter as daughter of 'Betsy Carter'. If someone looks at original document, I wonder if this could read daughter of Baley Carter because the old handwriting sometimes was not real clear. Very seldom did they list the child as daughter of a female, if the father was alive. And Baley could look like Betsy.
