Notes for UNKNOWN CARTMILL from Phil Cartmill:
This report is a work in progress as of 12-1-05. Much of the early family history was gleaned from the book "Cartmill-Hubbard Kin" written by Dr. Lloyd Poland (1989). Dr. Hubbard used good research techniques including land records, tax records, census, wills, and marriage records for his main line family data. He offers anecdotal comments on the other branches of this family tree as theybecame apparent through his primary research.
There is no information as to Henry's parents, or if there was any connection with the Nathaniel Cartmell line, who had settled nearby in 1685. Recent DNA tests have shown that Henry, John, and Nathaniel had a common ancestor in England/Ireland. It is not known if Henry and John were born in Chester Co. PA, as no birth records have been found. For that reason, England/Ireland has been used for their assumed birth place.
It is clear that Henry had an older brother named John, and that line is recapped in a separate report.
All three lines (Nathaniel, Henry, and John) followed similar paths of westward migration, and they often appear in the same areas throughout the 1700's and 1800's which makes it difficult to separate the lines. Henry's family migrated to Augusta Co. VA and established themselves in Botetourt Co. VA where there are many references to this family. John's family migrated to Augusta County also, but left there in 1788 to settle in Bath Co. KY. Most of Nathaniel's family migrated to Frederick County, VA and there is much history of this line there.
All three lines were prone to use different spellings of the surname; primarily Cartmill, Cartmell, and Cartmel, as well as other variations of the surname.
The Henry line used the Cartmill spelling, and for the sake of continuity, I will use this spelling throughout this report. If a variation of the spelling of the surnamne was used by a particular family group, I will try to so note. There are instances of different spelling in the same family within the same generation.
