IMMIGRATION NOTES:
Among 207 Frenc and Swiss passengers who sailed from Gravesend, England on 10 April 1700 on the Mary and Ann of London. They arrived at the mouth of the James River in Virginia on 23 July 1700 13 weeks later.

Originally settled on the James River 20 miles North of Richmond (on the South side, West of present day Richmond that did not exist at that time) in what is now Powhatan County. The Huguenots were granted 10,000 acres of land which had previously belonged to the now extinct Monacan Indian Tribe. The Manakintowne Episcopal Church of today is about one mile from the original location of the town of which no traces are left today. They were directed and escorted in accordance with the instructions of Colonel William Byrd who operated a store South of present day Richmond and who was the most influential person in the area.

There is a copy of a contract signed by both Pierre Chastain and Edward Scott in Manakin, Virginia.

He is buried on the 1,154 acres of land granted to him by William, King of England.
He was a Vestryman in the Manakin Church.

OCCUPATION NOTES:
Dr. Chastain was a civil and military leader of their community.
" . . . The Capt. or head of the place is a surgeon by profession named Chaltin, who had long resided at Ifferton" (i.e., Yverdon, Canton Vaud, Switzerland: "Report of Journey of Francis Louis Michell, from Berne Switzerland to Virginia," MS in the city library of Berne, originally published in "Neues Berner Taschenbuch auf das Jahr 1898", translated by the Rev. William J. Hinke, and published in VMHB, 24:122). Although a footnote in the latter states that Chaltin is probably identical with Stephen (Etienne) Chastain, this is certainly an error. Chaltin was Pierre. The Antoine Trabue estate lists creditors Doctor Chastaine, Stephen Chastaine, John Chastaine. (Henrico County, Virginia, Deeds and Wills, 1725-1737, p. 180)

DEATH NOTES:
Pierre's will names his wife "Magdalin", his three sons John, Peter and Rene, and his five daughters, "Judith, Susanna, Mary, Elizabeth and Magdalin," listed without married names. He signed the will with his customary "Chastaing" (without Christian name).
