Descendants of David Strickland

Generation No. 1

1. DAVID1 STRICKLAND was born Abt. 1735 in Virginia?/ North Carolina?1, and died 25 March 1804 in Hancock County, GA2. He married ELIZABETH. She was born 17343, and died 08 September 1815 in Hancock County, GA4.

Notes for D
AVID STRICKLAND:
According to a report prepared by an unknown researcher, David Strickland with brothers, Jacob & John migrated from Virginia in 1771 and settled on Rocky Comfort Creek with the Cherokee. This land was later ceded by the Cherokee and became Franklin County, GA. David & Jacob left for Washington Co (later Greene, later Hancock) about 1785.

David is on the Hancock Co Tax Digest, 1795, as owner of 287 & 1/2 acres on waters of Island Creek and 160 acres on waters of Oconee River. Three sons in the household were assessed with a poll tax: Robert, Solomon & Jeptha. The first tract of land was purchased from Rueben Jones on Dec. 24, 1792 and the deed was witnessed by Jacob Strickland.

Robert & Solomon are not named in David's will. It seems he gave them a portion of his estate during his lifetime. The Tax Digest of 1804 reveals that David is no longer the owner of the 160 acre headright. Robert & Solomon in the same year are in possession of 50 acres each, granted by Strickland, on the waters of Oconee River. Jeptha & Thomas are willed the Island Creek land with Jeptha receiving 186 acres of same. In the 1807 Tax Digest Jeptha is in possession of the 100 acres on Oconee River and Robert & Solomon have apparently departed.

Children of D
AVID STRICKLAND and ELIZABETH are:
  i.   POLLY2 STRICKLAND.
  Notes for POLLY STRICKLAND:
A Polly Strickland married Richard Loyd, Jan 27, 1811 in Hancock Co.
A Polly Strickland witnessed a deed between James Muse & Davie Tool in Hancock Co. Dec. 31, 1799.

Denson Hamby states that Thomas Strickland married a Polly Watkins, no date given. At this time I cannot determine that these records refer to the daughter of David Strickland.

The Hutchings Bible Register records the death of Mary Strickland on April 15, 1849 at age 68. As Polly was a common nickname for Mary, this woman could be either the unmarried daughter of David Strickland or the wife of Thomas Strickland.

ii.   VASHTY STRICKLAND, m. (?) LANCASTER.
  Notes for VASHTY STRICKLAND:
David Strickland's will names a daughter "Vashty Lankester". Some copies of this will have the name as "Valisity".

2. iii.   MOURNING STRICKLAND, b. 1769, North Carolina; d. 12 September 1852, Hancock County, GA.
  iv.   JEPTHA STRICKLAND, b. Bet. 1769 - 1770, probably North Carolina; d. 16 August 1845, Hancock County, GA5.
  Notes for JEPTHA STRICKLAND:
Jeptha did not name a wife or children in his will. He left all of his property to his sister, Mourning Muse, and her three youngest grandchildren. Jeptha was the primary heir of his father's estate, receiving the largest portion, and appears to have been the oldest son.

I have found no record that Jeptha was ever married so I don't know what to make of the 1840 census in which Jeptha is the head of a household containing an elderly female, who is most likely his sister Mourning, but also an adult male & female with 5 children between the ages of 5 and 15. As Daniel Muse's children are accounted for on the same census, I have no idea who these other people are.

  v.   SOLOMON STRICKLAND, b. Bet. 1770 - 1773.
  Notes for SOLOMON STRICKLAND:
Solomon was also the recipient of 50 acres from his father, which was sold or transferred to Jeptha prior to 1807. Solomon probably accompanied his brother, Robert, to Mississippi.

3. vi.   ROBERT STRICKLAND, b. 1774, Georgia; d. 1856, Washington Parrish, LA.
  vii.   THOMAS STRICKLAND, b. 1776, NC6; d. 07 November 1850, Hancock County, GA7.
  Notes for THOMAS STRICKLAND:
Thomas Strickland is on the 1840 census of Hancock County with only 1 other person in the household; a female age 50-60. This may be the Mary Strickland who died in 1849. In 1850 Thomas is living in the household of his nephew, Daniel Muse. According to Denson Hamby, Thomas married Polly Watkins.
