Hi Jewell,
I found out that John P. Chapman's middle name was "Price".... from your
e-mail dated 11 May 1999... (see note below).
His son Addison Price Chapman went by "Price Chapman" - see 1880 census
below.
I have also corresponded with Betty Irwin of Greenback, TN, but I don't
think I've heard from Tiffany before. I heard from Mona just a few days ago
on the 29th July.

I had info. on Addison Price Chapman married to Sarah Vance (I don't have a
marriage record though), but I found him on the 1880 Loudon Co. TN census as
married to a "Susan" (perhaps she went by Susan instead of Sarah?) and I
didn't see any children named Bonaparte (no birth date) or Andrew (b. 1872)
here (I can't recall where I got those children's names):

I'm also thinking that Malinda T. Chapman b. 1831 (wife of A.P. Chapman) was
his "first wife". Have you found any marriage record for them? Malinda may
have died when giving birth - she was very young when she died - only 23
years old). Have you found Addison Price Chapman on 1860 census with any
young children born before 1854?
In the Unitia Cem. in Loudon Co. TN (where John Price Chapman is supposed to
have been buried in 1886), I found the following listing for Malinda T.
Chapman in Unitia Cem. Loudon Co. TN:

I don't know if you had this, but I did find John P. Chapman and his wife
Sarah on the 1880 Loudon Co. TN census as shown below... It says his father
was born in MD and his mother was born in VA. Sarah's father was born in PA
and her mother was born in TN. They both died in 1886 in Unitia Cem. Loudon
Co. TN. If John P. Chapman's father was born in MD, I wonder what records
can be found on the Chapman families there...! :-)

Hi, how are you?
I was wondering if you have made any headway on the Chapman line... particularly back to Wythe Co. VA?
I heard from another researcher who believes that her GG Grandfather Benjamin Chapman had three brothers: John P., Thomas and William and that they were from Wythe Co., VA. Some of the brothers went to TN, and were in Giles Co., and then moved south to Limestone Co., AL. Her ancestor Benjamin married Frances and had nine children.

I'm going to be going to Blount and Knox Co. TN to do some research for one to two days pretty soon. Is there any information you'd like for me to look up on these lines? I will take a camera and try to visit some of their graves and take pictures of their headstones if I get a chance.

I have found that the Loudoun Co. and Blount Co. TNGenWeb sites have added a lot of helpful information to their sites! I'll do a search for Chapman's today and see if I can find a clue as to where Martha A. Chapman and David Thompson were buried...
Hope you are well.
Sincerlely,
Laura G. in GA

Since John Price Chapman was buried at Unitia Cemetery in Loudon Co., TN in 1886, I thought I'd do a search and I found the following Chapman cemetery records shown below. I'm thinking that A.P. Chapman was "Addison Price Chapman" (son of John Price Chapman, but I only have one wife shown for A.P. named Sarah Elizabeth Vance... Do you know anything of this line?
I did not see a record for John Price Chapman buried there, but that was from "Early Alexanders and Cloyd's Creek Blount County, TN." by Hazel Vance Alexander & Betty Blankenship Murr 1991.

John P. Chapman m: Sarah Humphrey Mc Lin

Posted by Jewell Chapman on Fri, 25 May 2001, in response to Rufus Mills, b.1809, posted by John on Thu, 24 May 2001

Surname: Chapman, Mc Lin, Humphrey, McClung, Thompson, Allen, Vance, Lane, Dunlap, Madison, Hare, Murray, Mills, Anderson, Franklin, Finger, Wheeler, Scarbrough, Potter, Taylor, Alexander, Brooks, Reevly

My 2nd great grandparents John P. Chapman and Sarah Humphrey McLin died in Loudon County, Tn. They are buried at the Unitia Presbyterian Cemetary. This is the John P. Chapman on page 213 of his grand daughter Hazel Vance Alexander's book "Early Alexanders and Cloyd's Creek Blount County, Tennessee".

In Hazel's book there is reference to John P. Chapman's son Addison Price Chapman. On pg. 204 of same book is a photo of Addison holding his granddaughter Gail Alexander Brooks. There is a biographical of Addison on page 205 of same book and his obituary is on pg. 206 of the book.

Emma Vance Chapman, the daughter of Addison Price Chapman and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Vance, married James Russell Alexander. There are photos of Emma and her husband James, as well as much information on their family in the above referenced book by their daughter Hazel Vance Alexander. Hazel's book is an excellent history of the Alexander family.

The above referenced names are all names of families who married the descendants of my John P. Chapman. I haven't found the names of John P's parents and siblings yet but I hope to eventually. I know he was born March 9, 1798 in Wythe County, VA. I haven't found him on any records before he married.

I would love to collaborate my search for the ancestors of John P. Chapman and his siblings with other family researchers. Please e-mail me direct: JewellC@aol.com. I hope to hear from lots of cousins. Thanks, Jewell Chapman

Jewell,

I found an indenture made 27th of August 1806 between William Chapman and
John Henderson where John Henderson gave William Chapman 15 acres of land,
it was witnessed by a Samuel Henderson and William Tipton.

In John Hendersons Will 7 Aug 1824 Greene County TN Will book 1, pp 11-12.
John Henderson Will probated 23 Jun 1826 gave Elizabeth Chapman a slave
Lucy and if Elizabeth died Lucy was to go to John Chapman Elizabeth's son.

Do you have a copy of this Will. Elizabeth had lots of brothers and
sisters. i have copy of names signed where all the legatees of this Jon
Henderson signed. William Chapman did sign his name used Wm instead of
William.

I'm going to attach a ad relating to the disposal of this John Henderson's
goods.

I'll continue to look for Chapman data for you. The McLin data you sent was
interesting but I suspect that my Mclin connections came from some
relationship that occured between hendersons and McLins before 1766 in VA.

HENDERSON
Seeking any information on Isaac HENDERSON, who gave his age as 60, and birthplace as Tennessee, on the 1850 Census,Habersham County, GA. On same record, his wife is listed as Nancy, age 56, born inVirginia. Maiden name unknown. Their children: William HoytHENDERSON (b. 1811, NC); Goolsberry HENDERSON, (b. 1817, NC );Robert Leonard HENDERSON (b.c. 1820, NC ); Albert Hines HENDERSON (b.1823, NC); Susannah HENDERSON (b.c. 1826, NC ) and Nancy HENDERSON(b.c.1827, NC ). Oral tradition says Isaac moved to Habersham County,GA, from Buncombe-Rutherford County, NC, area. He bought land in Habersham County August, 1838, but may have been there earlier. Allchildren were married in Habersham, GA, except Robert. The date andplace of Robert's marriage is unknown. I would like to know the dateand place of Isaac’s marriage to Nancy: Tennessee? North Carolina?Virginia? Would also like to know her maiden name, and the parents ofeach of them. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

HENDERSON GENEALOGY
My Hendersons of Tennessee

By: Esther M. Ziock Carroll

JAMES HENDERSON, Sr. - My fifth great grandparents were Hannah Sollars and James Henderson, Sr. James and Hannah were the parents of six children. *John the oldest being born circa 1778, Samuel born 1785, *James born 1791, daughters Nancy; Jane; Ellen. In 1787 James Henderson, Sr., received a purchase grant from the state of North Carolina. He paid 20 pounds for 200 acres of land on the south bank of the Nolichuckey River in the Great Smokey Mountains in Greene County in what would later become the state of Tennessee. The famous frontiersman, Davy Crockett, was born on the bank of the Nolichucky River in Greene County in 1786 so it is quite possible that the Henderson family was acquainted with the Crockett family. James Henderson died in 1793 in Greene County. His widow, Hannah, married James Tallant in 1799. John Henderson, came to Missouri circa 1802 & settled in Jefferson County and the rest of the Henderson/Tallant family came to Missouri circa 1810 settling in St. Francois & Washington Counties.

PLEASE NOTE MY THEORY ON AGES OF CHILDREN:

I have been in touch with a LOT of Henderson researchers the last couple of years all of whom focused on Hannah's & James' son Samuel as the oldest child being born 1785. Possibly this was because Samuel's birthdate was the only birthdate they had up to this point as very little if any research had been done on Samuel's brothers John & James. .However, I believe that John is the oldest son & possibly the oldest child of Hannah & James. Here is why I think this: John went to Missouri & settled in Jefferson County circa 1802. For John to have been of an age to settle in Missouri in 1802 & appears to be the first of Hannah's & James' children to do this it would indicate that John was considerablly older than his brothers Samuel & James. Another point to consider is: In James Henderson,Sr.'s, will dated 1793 it states: "I give & bequeath to my beloved son John a brown mare & colt, my saddle & gun." It lists no other children by name only specifying that the remainder of the estate be divided equally between James' wife, Hannah, & other children. It was usually the custom of the time to list the children in a will in order of their age with oldest being first on the list. Sometimes the sons were grouped together & sometimes daughters were grouped together usually in order of oldest to youngest. Applying this theory would indicate John as the oldest son. Samuel would have only been 8 years old at the time of his father's death. It is unlikely that James Sr. would have left a horse, saddle & gun to a young child & with son John being the only son mentioned by name in the will & inheriting a horse, saddle & gun it would indicate that John was older than Samuel. Also I was told by another Henderson researcher not too long ago that a Henderson bible record states that John is Hannah's & James' oldest son being born circa 1778 so this helps to confirm my theory. Another point: Many people have estimated Hannah's & James' marriage date as 1784 based on the birthdate of Samuel & as him being the oldest. With James death in 1793 this would be nine years after the marriage which would mean that Hannah & James had six children in nine years. Possible but not likely. With John's supposed birth date of 1778 this would make it a 15 year marriage which would better accomodate the birth of six children. And with James,Jr., being born in 1791, two years before his father's death that would make James Jr. the youngest son & likely the youngest child.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Other families associated with the Hendersons that came from Greene County, Tennessee to southeast Missouri were: The Alexander family settled in Farmington, St. Francois County. I believe that James Henderson's wife, Hopy, may have been an Alexander. Willoughby and Zachariah Goforth settled in Caledonia, Washington County. They were relatives of Mary Goforth who was married to Samuel Henderson, Sr. Philip Ohaver who was married to Jensy Henderson, sister of John, James & Samuel, settled in Big River Township in Jefferson County. It appears Jensy may have died between 1825 and 1830 and Philip died sometime between 1834 - 1839. Washington, St. Francois, and Jefferson Counties, Missouri all adjoin each other so it would not have been difficult for these families to visit back and forth.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

There were other Hendersons in Greene County, Tennessee besides James and Hannah. There was John Henderson (believed to be the brother of James, Sr.), Robert Henderson, Rev. Henderson, Daniel Henderson, and Joseph Henderson.

In Greene County, Tennessee there was a Henderson's Station, Henderson's Depot, and Henderson's Ford.

According to the LDS Ancestal File James Henderson,Sr.'s father was Samuel Henderson born 1740 and died 1782. I have not yet begun researching this generation of Hendersons so have no verification on the information.

May 10, 1999: Today I received the book "Early Alexanders and
Cloyd's Creek Blount County, TN." by Hazel Vance Alexander & Betty Blankenship Murr 1991. On Page 213 is a pedigree chart which begins with Emma Vance Chapman (spouse: James Russell Alexander). Emma is the dau of Addison Price Chapman. On this chart is John P. Chapman and it shows his date of death to be 1-23-1886. Place of death: Loudon Co., Tn. Burial place is Unitia Cemetary. This is the first time I've gotten info about place of death and burial.

On page 203 of Hazel's book she says Howard Lee Alexander, son of James R. and Emma Alexander was born in the cabin on his grandparents farm (Price and Sarah Chapman) at Meadow. This appears to be Addison Price rather than his father John P. who also married a Sarah. At first my heart skipped a beat because I thought I'd finally found more information about John P. Chapman.

When John P. Chapman was born in Wythe County, Va. March 9, 1798, there were, reportedly only 2 Chapman families in Wythe County at that time.

Ref John P. Chapman Bible from Hazel V. Alexander.

I don't know if you have any information on this Hazel V. Alexander but my guess would be if you want any information on John P. Chapman you might look to see if you can find who she is. All of my geneology notebooks are in the process of being moved from one location to another and at the rate that is happening I wouldn't be surprised if it takes me another year or two to accomplish that task. I do have some info on my computer (which is always accessible). I don't remember how far back I filed with the LDS History on the McLin line, but do know I talked with someone else on the Internet who's husband's grandmother had done some research and passed the files on to her and her husband before her death and she had some more information back a few generations farther than what I had at the time. It was on Alexander McLin, Sarah's grandfather Her info was that he was born in 1755 in Pennsylvania and his father is John McLin. She also had that Ann Laird Blair was was born in Ireland in 1758 and died 29 Aug 1829. Not sure about this information. She lists Brothers and Sisters order of birth as Robert, Brice, Richard, William, Joseph, Martha, John II, Ann I, but also lists marriage of parents in 1758 which is same year of Ann Lairds birth date.??I have not been able to do any more research to prove or confirm the information she gave me.

The Blairs are a very tough family I have found as there are quite a lot
of John Blairs living in the Tennessee area at that same time and though
I am sure from the will of John Blair that his son-in-law is Alexander
McLin, as far as determining from the living information on the John
Blairs I am not sure exactly which of the 3 I have found is the one I
want further information on. I believe from my Internet friend that he
was born in 1736 in County Down Ireland. If you wish me to send you a
gedcom file of what I have just let me know.

Jewell,

It was good to hear from you. I don't have the parents or siblings of John
P. Chapman. With just a quick look thru my files I found a note that said
Thomas & Buonaparte were the children of Elizabeth Jane Chapman. She married Aaron Dunlap. There is a note that says they were possiblely the children of a previous marriage. I found them listed on the 1860 census in Blount Co., Tn. Then on the 1880 Blount Co., Tn. census I have a Bone Chapman listed with wife Isabella, son Walter, and a daughter whose name I couldn't make out. Living next door was a Chapman whose name was possibly Thomas with a wife named Sarah and a daughter Minnie. The note about the mother of Thomas and Bone was from Hazel Alexander. She is a cousin too, but she has passed away. I would like to exchange info.

Notes for Sarah Humphrey Mc Lin:

Hi Jewell,

My dad and I are both looking into the proof that John P. Chapman's middle name is Pealer. My grandfather did much genealogy research before he passed away, and my dad has that information. Also, two of my grandfather's cousins believe it to be Pealer as well. Unfortunately, there is no proof. I will continue searching, and let you know of anything I find.
Sincerely,
Tiffany Chapman

I think his name was Lyman Draper, people general refer to the publication
as the Draper Collection. It is all on film, 25 volumes. I would think most
large libraries would know about the collection. If you have trouble, let
me know. Bob Henderson
The Clack family was related to the McLin family. There is a book about
these families, I'll get that title and author for you.

While looking over some other data, I was reminded that there is some data
in the Draper Collection about McLin family members. Do you know about that
collection. It consist of 25 volumes collected in the 1800's about early
history of America. The original collection is in Wisconsin, however there
is one complete Draper collection copy in every state. Here in Kansas it is
in the University of Kansas library. There is a printed index, of which I
have a copy. I'll check it for Chapman.

In Hazel V. Alexander's book on pg. 213 she shows Sarah Humphrey McLin's date of death to be 10-17-1886.

The following McLin was also married in Blount Co. I don't know if he's related to Sarah H. McLin.

MCLIN, Geo A marr. MCCONNELL, Amanda J 25-NOV-1857

Her Mother died at her and John P. Chapman's home in 1853 per Loudon
Free Press Vol 1 (1852-53).

Sarah Humphrey MC Lin b: Washington Co, TN April 26, 1801 m: John P.
Chapman. Sarah's parents were Wm Mc Lin and Elizabeth Humphrey. I wonder if
any of this family is still in Washington Co, TN.

These Humphreys descend from John Humphrey b: 1721 County Armagh, Northern
Ireland.

These McLins descend from Alexander Mc Lin b: 1758 in VA, m: Martha Laird
Blair who was born 1760 in Pennsylvania.

John P. Chapman was born Mar 9, 1798 in Wythe Co, VA died in Loudon Co, TN,
buried in Unitia Presbyterian Cemetary.
