Notes for Albert Edward Chaffey: Albert Edward Chaffey is his real name, known as Alfred Edward by some.
A.E. was deported back to Canada in the 1930s for not having imigration papers. He eventually returned to California where he died from a broken neck as a result of being hit by a vehicle at about age 84.
According to my Grandmother Helen, A.E. was 54 years old on her husband Lloyd Stuart Chaffey's birth certificate.
According to Lloyd Stuart Chaffey II, A.E. was a civil engineer and worked on the Mulholland Tunnel.
Acording to John Ahldain Chaffey, A.E. died in 1943 or 44.
A.E. Was known to reside in Canada, Minnesota, Arizona, California, Washington and possibly Arkansas.
Abert was known to have at children with at least three women, possibly more. His wife Margret Miriam was killed when the car he was driving was run off the road on 24 November, 1927. According to one account he then abandoned his two small children Douglas Cameron and Lloyd Stuart "Stu" to an orphanage in Arkansas (John Brown's Home for Children). However, the 1930 census shows Lloyd and Douglas living with their grandmother, Joella S. Love in Glendale, California. Lloyd and Douglas were eventually adopted by their older br other Frederick Benjamin Chaffey.

Letter from Bruce A. Varcoe: Hi Lloyd- I m absolutely certain that Albert Edward CHAFFEY was a son of Elswood CHAFFEY 1827-1868. Have you seen the 1881 Canadian Census. There is a widow "Mrs CHAFFEY" age 46 living in Brockville, Ontario. Her occupation is given as a "Music Teacher". Her children are Emley (ie Emily), Amelia, Albert, and Walter ages 20,17,15 and 13 respectively. Therefore at age 15 Albert born circa 1866. This correlates with your statement that "Albert Edward was age 54 when Lloyd S CHAFFEY 1st was born in 1920". I am quite certain that "Albert CHAFFEY" buried in British Columbia is your ggreat grandfather. However he did not die in California as you state but died in Coquitlam, British Columbia. He very well may have been in a car accident and suffered a broken neck in California but he did not die there. I have the B. C. Death Registration for Albert CHAFFEY. He died December 27, 1947 (NOT 1948) at the Home For The Aged in Coquitlam. He had only been in Coquitlam 23 days (his permanent residence is given as the Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver). He was buried on 2 January 1948 at The BC Mental Health Institution in New Westminster, B.C. (NOT in Coquitlam). It states he was in the Province 6 years therefore this ties in very nicely with the statement "The last time I remember seeing my grandfather Albert Chaffey was Christmas in about 1939." Virtually nothinfg seems to have been known about him at the time of his death (in fact the informant for the death registration is given as "Committal Papers"). "Unknown" is given for all of the following: Citizenship, Birthplace, Name of Father, Maiden Name of Mother, and Birthplaces of Father and Mother. Of particular note is his occupation is given as Retired (Contractor). Date of birth is given as 1863 (no month given) and age "about 84". I think it is more likely he was born in 1866 and therefore age about 81 (per your statement that his age was 54 on a birth certificate as above). He is buried at a place called "Woodlands School" which is on the grounds of the BC Mental Health Institution in New Westminster. The place has been closed for many years however you can still drive around on the grounds. I was there about a year ago and discovered there are no gravestones in the Cemetery. They were removed for "safekeeping" as I guess there was a fear of vandalism as the place had been shut down. If you want me to send you copies of what I have (including a copty of the photo of Elswood CHAFFEY) send me your snail mail address. Letter from George Frederick "Fred" Chaffey grandson of Albert Edward: "The last time I remember seeing my grandfather Albert Chaffey was Christmas in about 1939. When Albert was killed, his body was sent back to Canada and he was burried in a paupers grave there. My father did not find out that he had been killed till some time later. My uncle Frederick Benjamin adopted Doug and Stu and I remember meeting them at my uncle Fred's ranch in Victorville, CA. - they were in their late teens, I think." There is a grave in Coquitlam Provincial Mental Hospital, British Columbia, Canada for a man named Albert Chaffey who died 28 Dec 1948, aged 84 years. The age is about right, This could very possibly be him.
