Epaphroditus Rudder (son of Samuel Rudder and Anne Mumford)974 was born 1734 in Virginia, and died July 1787 in Norfolk County, VA975. He married Unknown.

The following information was gathered from a letter found in the Shreveport Memorial Library, by Belinda McMichael, from the American Revolution War Pensions Office signed by A.D. Hiller, Assistant to Administrator.( Record #17580 - Revolutionary War pension claim)

While a resident of Lunenburg, Co., VA, served early in the Revolution as Lt. in Captain Edward Garland's VA Co. of calvary. In April 1778, he was commissioned 1st. Lt. of a VA state regiment, in Pulaski's Legion. On August 1, 1780, Epaphroditus was commissioned Lt. of Light Dragoons and served until 2/22/1785. He was also taken prisoner at Petersburg & held by the British a long time.

Robert (son of Alexander) stated that Epaphroditus moved to Darlington Co., SC until he died in 1795. He also stated that Epaphroditus was a carpenter & engaged in framing houses & shipping them to the W. Indies.

On 4/28/1847, one James Ferguson (74) made affidavit in Knox Co., TN that Epaphroditus Rudder moved to SC - was a carpenter - heard of his death & of his never marrying.

On 5/24/1847, one Bartholomew (89) made affidavit in Campbell Co., TN that Epaphroditus, the soldier, never married.

On 11/5/1849 Simon S. Stubbs, administrator, presented papers in order to secure any pension that might have been due on account of the services of Epaphroditus, in behalf of the heirs & presented information to the Co. Court of Norfolk VA,as satisfactory evidence of the death & heirs.

In support of the application for pension in Norfolk Co., VA, one Lemuel Fentress made affidavit in said co. on 5/15/1850, that he knew the soldier, Epaphroditus Rudder & he was of Norfolk Co., VA & after serving in the Revolution returned home to that Co. & died at harvest time about 7/20/1789.

No pension was ever allowed as the soldier had received all that was due him, therefore no money was due to the heirs under the provisions of the act which they applied.

There are no explanations in the papers on file, of any discrepancies in dates, places, names, & statements of applicants, at centers.

According to pension claim, Record #17580, Epaphroditus served early in the Revolution as Lt. in Captain Edward Garland's VA Co. calvary. In April 1778, he was commissioned 1st Lt. in Pulaski's Legion (a VA state regiment). From 8/1/1780 - 2/22/1785 he was commissioned Lt. of light dragoons. Also, he was taken prisoner at Petersburg & held by the British a long time.
