JAMES N. BRACEWELL'S MILITARY CAREER Having no desire to remain on the farm I enlisted in the Army Air Corp on August 19th 1941 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, serial number 17029363. On to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. for basic training and than to Chanute Field, Ill. where I attended a very through aircraft and engine school. I was home in Allerton, Iowa on a weekend pass when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Graduated January 1942 and assigned to the 414th Bomb Sqd.of the famous 97th Bomb Grp.stationed at McDill Field, Fla. This being a B-17 bombers. After a short time in maintenance and due to a shortage of aircrews I was detailed to be a tail gunner and sent to Las Vegas for aerial gunnery training. Returned to McDill and flew sub patrol and many practice bombing missions before the unit was sent to England. Arrived in Grafton Underwood, England on June 4th 1942. The first American bombing mission was oddly enough on the very same day I enlisted a year before. This mission occurred on August 19th 1942 and indeed I was on it. After my 11th mission I went into the hospital with pneumonia. Two days later my aircraft blown out of the sky over Germany and no survivors. I than reverted back to my original desires which was aircraft maintenance and was a crew chief on B-17's for the rest of my remaining time in Europe. In Nov. of 1942 our unit was pulled out of England and sent to North Africa where we conducted missions over Italy and southern Germany. From North Africa unit went to Sicily and on into Italy. August of 1944 I was sent back to the States on special assignment. Married Mildred G. Fenimore Sept. 13th and proceeded to the Boeing Aircraft Factory, Seattle where I attended a very tough schooling on B-29 Aircraft which were just coming off the production line. Now to Tucson, Az. and a new B-29 unit with the job of line Chief. Since my original enlisted date had already passed I elected to be discharged Sept 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, Ks. an

The above was copied from the Colne Parish registry. Following is a description of Banns contributed by David G.S.Battersby(Revd.): "Banns are read in an English Parish Church at the principle service for three consecutive Sundays before a wedding. They have to be read in the home parish churches of both bride and groom (if they are resident in different parishes). If no impediment to the marriage is alleged a certificate is issued which permits the marriage to take place. The certificate is valid for three months from the date of the last reading. The banns are not part of the wedding, the wedding service has to occur. This has been the law since the Prayer Books of Edward V1 1549 & 1552. The only alternative to banns is the issue of a licence - Bishop's, Special Licence from the Archbishop of York or Canterbury, Superintendent Registrar's Licence from a Registry Office." David G.S.Battersby (Revd.)
  • Pearl Hartley Bracewell (8 KB)
Pearl Bracewell was the first son of John Hartley and Margaret Ellen Sharr Bracewell. Pearl farmed most of his life on the old homestead S.W. of Allerton, IA. He retired to Allerton and the farm was sold. Gary Bracewell was the oldest Grandson and spent many summers working on the farm for spending money. Gary remembers that "Grandpa always got up before dawn to milk the cows and then would come in for breakfast. We always stopped at high noon for dinner and went back to work at 1:00 P.M. Even when it rained we did something to keep busy. Also I was never allowed to eat between meals-- you ate your fill when served and that was it until the next meal. You can rest assured I did not miss a meal , but I was able to lose a lot of unneeded fat."
