From an English paper - no date or name, but obviously 1930 or later:

"SIR PHIPIL CHETWODE A FIELD-MARSHAL -- The King has been pleased to approve of the promotion of General Sir Philip W. Chetwode, Bt., G.C.B., K.C.M.G., D.S.O., Colonel. The Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons). Colonel, King George's Own Light Cavalry, Indian Army, Commander-in-Chief, India, to the rank of Field-Marshal, in succession to the late Field-Marshal Sir William R. Robertson, Bt. G.C.B., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., D.S.O., D.C.L., LL.D., Colonel, Royal Horse Guards (The Blues).

"Sir Philip Chetwode is the senior general but one on the Active List, having been promoted to that rank in 1926. In the South African War he gained the D.S.O. Five months before the Great War began he was given command of the 5th Cavalry Brigade which he took to France, and which did so much to locate the enemy and cover the retreat of 1914. Next came the command of the 2nd Cavalry division. At the end of 1916 he went to Egypt. His force played a great part in the campaign which led to the capture of Jerusalem.

"At the War Office after the War he was Military Secretary and Deputy Chief of the Imperial General Staff. He succeeded Sir George Macdonogh as Adjutant General in 1922, but did not hold the appointment long, as his capacity for commend caused him to be sent in the reorganization period to Aldershot. In 1927 he became Chief of the General Staff in India, and then Commander-in-Chief in 1930 in succession to Sir William Birdwood. An Old Etonian, he is 63 years of age."

NEW YORK TIMES, WEDNESDAY, MAY 11 [year is missing - would have been 1930 or later]:

"Lady Chetwode Arrives in Tourist Cabin; 'Why Spend Money Uselessly?' Her Attitude

"Lady Chetwode, one of the leading social figures of England and the wife of the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in India, arrived in New York yesterday in a tourist third cabin of the Majestic. She is here to see her son, Roger Charles George Chetwode, who is studying for a financial career in the banking house of J.P. Morgan & Co. She will be the guest of Mrs. Corneilus Vanderbilt.

"Asked why she traveled in such simplicity Lody [sic] Chetwode replied: "I am only here for a fortnight to see my son. why should I spend a lot of money uselessly to do it? We were very comfortable in the tourist accommodations."

"The tourist-third fare on the Majestic is $99 and the minimum rate for first class is $140. There were 113 other persons traveling third, and after Lady Chetwode had made her brief statement she walked down the gangplank and to the section of the pier where the tourists' baggage was segregated from the two other classes. she seemed serene.

"Lady Chetwode's husband, General Sir Phillip Chetwode, is the twenty-ninth lord of the Manor of Chetwode, the lineage being traced back to before the Conquest. During the World War he commanded a cavalry division in France and the Twentieth Army Corps in Palestine. After the war he held many ranking positions with the British Army, and in 1928 became chief of the General Staff in India for two years. In 1930 he became Commander-in-Chief of the army in India and a member of the executive council of the Governor General.

"Sir Phillip is a Knight of Justice of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and he served in Burma and South Africa during the difficulties there in the last century. he has the Croix de Guerre, Order of the Nile, 2d class, Order of the Sacred Treasure of Japan, first class, and is a Commander of the Legion of Honor.
