Ancestors of America Adaline Wilson

Generation No. 2

      2. Thomas Wilson, born Abt. 1825 in KY; died Aft. 1870. He was the son of 4. William Wilson and 5. Sarah Hamblen. He married 3. Jane Harp Abt. 1844 in KY.

      3. Jane Harp, born 1826 in KY; died Bet. 1860 - 1870 in KY. She was the daughter of 6. Benager Harp and 7. Jane Moody.

Notes for Thomas Wilson:
In the 1860 Whitley Co., KY census, Clear Fork P.O., taken on 31 July 1860 (#1109/1014) Thomas is listed as Thos Willson, 35 male, Farmer, 300, 150, Kentucky. His wife is Ginsey (spelling?) age 34 and his children: Deliah, 15; James, 14; William, 12; Francis, 10 male; Catherine, 6 twin; Adline, 6 twin; Benager, 1 male. A Mary, 22, and Henry C., 18 were also listed, but could have been part of another household, or maybe Thomas' sister and brother? There was also a note attached to the entry (transcription) indicating Thomas Wilson married Jane Harp.

In the 1870 Whitley County KY census the family is listed in the South America Precinct, August 10, 1870, P.O. "Sot" or "Sat". Thomas Wilson, 45, farmer, 250 KY. His wife is listed as Sarah, 42, and children living with him: Susan, 18; Rachel, 15; Sophia, 11; Benager, 10; and Adaline, 16.

Since Thomas Wilson married Sarah Rodgers on 24 Februay 1870 it is presumed that his wife, Ginsey, listed in the 1860 census, died during that ten year period. And Chatherine, Adaline's twin sister, also does not show up in the 1870 census. Either she was married by that time or had died. Since Susan, Rachel and Sophia were not listed in the 1860 census they were probably Sarah's children from a previous marriage. Rogers could have been her maiden name or her married name.

Did Thomas have a third wife, Jane Harp? Or was "Ginsey" incorrect or a nickname for Jane?) On the web page of Tobias Harp (Jana Pawlowski) she shows Jane Harp (daughter of Benager Harp, granddaughter of Tobias Harp) born 1826 and married Thomas Wilson (son of William Wilson and Sarah Hamblen). There children were listed as: Catherine, born 10 April 1854; Thomas J., born 27 May 1857; Wymer J.; born 27 May 1856 (Thomas and Wymer were twins); Benager, born 15 May 1860; Mary Jane married Jacob Harvey Sowder. It is very possible that the twins, Thomas and Wymer, died before the 1860 census. The fact that Jane Harp's father was named Benager would indicate that this is the correct family. Benager was listed as age 1, which could have been 1 month old as the census was taken on 31 July 1860. In this case the wife would have had to be Jane.

  Notes for Jane Harp:
Most likely this was Jane Harp, daughter of Benager Harp. Benager Harp was born 1794 SC and died in 1863, Harp's Creek, Whitley County KY. He married Jane Moody (born 1799, died 1860, Harp's Creek) on 15 April 1816. They had at least 13 children. Benager Harp was the son of Tobias and Delilah (Carroll) Harp. Tobias was born in 1760 SC, served in the Revolutionary War, and died in 1845 at Harp's Creek KY. Delilah was born in 1770 and died in Whitley County KY. Since in the 1860 Whitley County KY showed Thomas & Ginsey? having a daughter named Deliah and a son named Benager, it would seem probable that this is the same family. Dates all coincide also.

2. BENAGER2 HARP (TOBIAS1) was born 1794 in South Carolina, and died 1863 in Harp's Creek,
Whitley County, Kentucky. He married (1) JANE MOODY July 12, 1810 in Knox County, Kentucky,

  Notes for Mary Jane Wilson:
A Mary Wilson shows on the 1860 Whitley Co. KY census - showing her age as 22 - since Jane (Harp) was born in 1826 she would have had to be 12 years old when Mary was born - it is more likely that this Mary was Thomas' sister.
