Ancestors of Isabel Eileen Malin

Generation No. 2

      2. David Caruth Malin1, born March 20, 1883 in St Louis, MO; died December 23, 1960 in Phoenix, Maricopa, AZ2. He was the son of 4. James Dalmazzo Malin and 5. Isabelle Lucinda Owsley. He married 3. Anna May O'Donnell September 19, 1907 in Collage Church, St Francis, St Louis MO.

      3. Anna May O'Donnell, born July 19, 1878 in St. Louis, MO3; died March 29, 1970 in Evanston, Cook, IL. She was the daughter of 6. John J. O'Donnell and 7. Rose McNeely.

Notes for David Caruth Malin:
Dave was born in St Louis, moved to Chicago (then Evanston) after his marriage. According to his daughter's (Doll's) photo album they were living in Davenport Iowa in 1910 when Doll was born, Sullivan Mo between 1910 and 1917 then in Robertville Mo by 1917 [by the Fall of 1917 they were living in Chicago according to family letters] . David was involved in Real Estate in the Evanston IL area, and for a while, his daughter, Isabel worked with him. He was the Treasurer of the IL Association of Real Estate Boards.

He and Anna Mae moved to Phoenix about 1953. He had several strokes and they moved in with their daughter, Isabel, living with them until his death. Anna Mae spent time with Isabel and Gin (in Evanston, where she was living at the time of her death). His family adored him, especially his son-in-law, Bob. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a gift of fantasy. He never dwelt in the past, refusing to speak of it, and never worried about the future. Today was his reality.

Once when he and Mae were newly married a rape occurred in their neighborhood and he was picked up as the description of the rapist could have fit him. Fortunately the rapist was quickly caught and Dave didn't suffer any problems at having been picked up.

David's middle name has been shown as Caruth and Caruthers. In the family plot at Calvery Cemetery St Louis the following are buried:

Mary T. & Rose Ann McNeely lived together. Celeste and Rosalie "Roro" referred to them as Cuz Rose and Cuz Mary. My guess is that they were cousins of Rose McNeely O'Donnell (Celeste, Anna Mae, and Rosalie's mother). They worked as bookbinders and according to letters written by Celeste (1918-1920) they were not in the best of health and Rose had a hearing problem. Rose was also the oldest of the two sisters and appeared to worry a lot about Mary.

Letter written by Dave (pretending to be the family dog, Toni, writing) on Friday the seventeeth [1939 to Anna Mae, Roe and Celeste as Mae was visiting them in St. Louis, which she did a lot. The funeral was for Nell (Duffy) Isaac.]:

"Hello Folks; These humans of mine seem to have writers cramp so I guess it is up to me to give you some Toni-grams.
Yes every one is well except that they had a belly ache one day they clled it by some funny name, intetinal [sic] something but believe me it was plain belly ache, and I should know.
Dad [Dave Malin - the actually writer of the letter] of course has a badly burnt hand but I guess he will survive, comes into the kitchen and picks up hot and I mean hot, spare ribs to munch on and the grease runs down on his hand. I have a very nice place to spend the day and watch for Bob [Gehrandt], right into the window edge in the dining? room, or porch as I would call it.
Well Is [Isabel Malin Gehrandt] and Dad went up to Fondulac [sic] and all the chatter whether they would the night before (no not Christmas) or early in the morning and try to get there in time to see the folks before the funeral or get there at the funeral and stay later. Well Dad decided the trouble of keeping them all night was worth the feeling of having some one there at night so away at three P.M. he and Is went and arrived at 6. 30 and had dinner and then called Jims house, useless said Is, you know where she is, but shades of AN, she was at the funeral parlor and no one knew Is when she went in and Hubert just hung on Dad and said we hoped so much some of you COULD come up. And was every one sorry Mae was not on deck as they felt they could just turn every thing over to her. How Ann would have loved that. Very large funeral, about twenty or more cars out to the grave yard up on the hill. and then over to Huberts to dinner and then a passenger to Chicago and with stops in Milwaukee back sound and safe at six P.M. Friday with some nice red apples. Dad said Tom and Carrie wanted him to come out there but Hubert [Isaac] seemed to object and Eileen [(Isaac) Halfman] wanted Is at her place so that was how it went. Poor Hubert was kind of dizzy and will miss Nell more as time goes on. Mrs. Duffy was in pretty bad shape and unless she pulls her self up is going to be failing pretty rapidly and Rose is simply worn to a frazzle as she has slept on a cot along side Nell for months and is really in need of a long rest, but of course will not take one and leave her mother at present. They said Tom was about as useful as a second thumb. Dad dont get much time to philander as he is checked up and has to go to Gins when Is goes out or to Dolls. A couple of Sundays Doll and Gin brang some dinner with them and ate at Bobs so Dad had to brang them home after dinner as we have very late dinner on Sunday as the darn fools eat what they call brakfast to twelve and Bob is the Chef. Sausages, eggs, cakes, maple syrup, toast, jam and coffee. Business accoding to Dad is slow but I think he makes a nickle or dime once in awhile, now he has to buy new rear lights for his car as he backed into a woman and the insurance co. paid her but not him. Secret -- I am just scared to daeth when I ride with him, no rear seat, I want to be up in front where I can bark if necessry as the darn fool drives a car with remote control, that is his mind is away in the next block or some where and why he don't kill himslef is more than I know. Dad is much sterner than Bob, he says get down, get down, just when Toni is comfortable and of course I dont dare sleep on his bed but just to even things I dont pay one bit of attention to him and have disinhereited him and adopted Bob.
Ricky is a pest but he is cute when he is not crying. His latest stunt is to put his head on the floor and cry when he cant get what he wants but if you ask if Ricky cries he say NO. Mama is gone, were, to St. Loiis to see RoRo and LaLa. He rides his bihicle [sic] all voer the oplace and he left it down here and was he glad to see it when Dad returned it. He really tho is quite cute and jabbers like a magpie.
Gin is still looking furniture but secretely I think Vin is kind of sad as each piece seems worse and really Is place is more comfortable as I dont think Gin would let me sleep on her new charis and what kind of a life for a spoilt dog like me.
But good lord what a day Thanksgiving will be for me with a whole gang there and no chance for my favorite window seat and Ricky pulling at me every minute.
Well I sure get tired with their chatter at times but humans are funny, alst Sunday Dad had passes to a Rugby game and he Bob went, I tried to tell Is to stay home, she had been crying with a bell ache all day, but no, gin the little devil dangles a FREE movie unto to her nose and she succumbed and went and were Dad and Bob sore when they came home hungry and no dinner in sight (it was in the stove however) but you know how men like to see food when they come in. Just about when they were ready to eat, in comes Gin and Is and saved the day. If Is would pay more attention to me things would be a little easier to her, as I am an old dog and after living with Mama Mae all these years, have had a lot of experience and know what is what. But the little dunce just simply don't pay a bit of attention to me and goes on her way and when you don't go to bed you cant get up and off all the gog goned sleepers, the Malin girls are the worst, even Doll is pretty good at it. But I ahve worked out a little scheme, when Bob gets up, I bite her toes and she has to get up and get his breakfast to get rid of me as I let her sleep after he goes. This is a secret as Bob gives her credit for getting him off but he is pretty good to me and I do what I can.
All of Mama Mae friends are asking about her and wishing her a good time. Gin went to St. Marys dinner last night, as she hasnt been over havnt heard any reports yet but she will come over and gabble and will tell you about it later.
I gave Dad some advise about the funeral and he was glad he took it as even if they were put to the bother of him and Is staying, from the way he talked they were really pleased to have him there that night at the FUNERAL HOME and cold introduce him and Is to every one which they couldn't the next day. Dad said you could never prove by him that was Nellie they buried as she didn't look at all like Nell in fact even when you knew he could get no resemblance at all. Perhaps he missed her smile and of course she had lost all her flesh. Beautiful metallic casket and high mass at church. Really believe Hubert appreciates Rose as he told Dad he would never be able to repay Rose for her devotion to Nell and what she had done around the house. It seems Mrs. Duffy has been there some time and Nell ahs done very little around the house for months. Ray [Halfman] was very helpful, got up at three the morning of the funeral to deliver the milk and said he felt just the same as if Nell was his mother said to Dad well you know I lived here with for over eight years. No thing really they could do but if it pleased them it was worth it as Dad has not forgotten what they did when Grandfather died. Only hopes they dont have any more until after the first of the year so you can do the honors. Non's Patsy is quite a big girl and will be a good looking woman. Huberts mother is bedridden andit was awfuly hard on her as she could do nothing about it. aunt Rose was just the same dont think she will ever change, she seems perpetual. Of course you know Jim's girl is in a cast.
Well I guess I have told you all news that you should know and believe you me I am too smart a dog to tell any other as the Dad might put the boot to me, you know he gets mad sometimes. Sorry you wont be weith us at Thanksgiving and am hoping as I am used to the Mama Maes turkey and dont know how this is going to work out as turkey is a bird that the Mama CAN cook. And believe it or not heard talk about dry crumb dressing, can you IMAGINE, dry crumb dressing in turkey. Mrs. Gehrandt is going to supply the Plum pudding.
Well I can just hear the Mama when she is pressed to do something she dont wnat to say 'cats tails'.
Well dearies be good and for love of Mike get the Woman to bed. TONI"

Notes for Anna May O'Donnell:
Anna Mae's father died when she and her sisters were young. All three girls were very close to each other and their mother. Mae loved to travel on extended trips, which she did throughout her life. She was small but feisty, taking on her 6'2" son-in-law, Bob, once when he spanked her grandchild. She chased him up and down the stairs with a switch, promising him bodily harm if he ever spanked Nicky and Julie again (it had just been a pat on the bottom because they didn't want to go up to bed).

One of Mae's favorite expressions when she had to do something she didn't want to do, was "Cats tails!".

On a War Ration Book One Anna Mae was described as 5'4", 120 lb, blue eyes, white hair, 54 - date of book: 5 May 1942. Note: obviously she miss stated her age by about 10 years

ii.   Virginia Malin, born September 20, 1910; died May 15, 1998 in Evanston, Cook, IL; married Vincent Ratcliffe July 01, 1939 in Evanston, Cook, IL; born in Evanston, Cook, IL; died 1988 in Evanston, Cook, IL.
  Notes for Virginia Malin:
Gin attended DePaul University in Chicago and her husband, Vin, attended Marquette university in Milwaukee. Gin was also working in Miami FL, where she received a letter from her father, David C. Malin, on 13 February. 1936.

Like her sisters, Gin was married at St. Marys Church, Evanston IL.

Gin died on 15 May 1998 at her home in Evanston IL. She apparently had a fall and had been in poor health for the few previous years. She was on oxygen and virtually house bound.

  Notes for Vincent Ratcliffe:
Vin and one of his brothers owned a dairy, Ratcliffe Creamery, in the 1930's in Evanston. Vin later owned a liquore store, which was right outside the town of Evanston IL line (Evanston was a "dry" town).

Vin was a tall, distinguished man, with a dry sense of humor. He would bring his family out to visit the Phoenix relatives each winter. The first time they came they flew TWA and it was quite a big deal as no one in the family had flown in a commercial airline up until that time - this would have been in the mid-1940's.
