This section discusses what I have discovered so far about the Richer line of the family. The first part of what follows deals with some “family folk lore” which was passed on to me as I started searching for information about the Richer family. Since I had so little to go on initially, I started with these stories and tried to find what parts of them were true and what parts were myth. Based on factual records which I discuss following this first part, it appears that they were mostly just interesting stories based on a little fact, and quite a bit of fable. I welcome any comments and information to the contrary, since there is always the possibility that some aspects of what I have found from other sources are incorrect.
Other than the names, Nelson Richer and Philomene Abar, my father mentioned his grandparents hardly at all to me. I am not sure how much he knew about them. In fact, he seldom mentioned his parents, and most of what I learned about them came from my mother, or in these later years, from what I have found while doing this genealogy research. From these other sources within my extended family, certain aspects of the Richer family has emerged, but it has been difficult to square them with what I have found in birth and marriage records. However, since separate sources within the family have told somewhat the same story, it is difficult to discount completely the possibility of their accuracy. Here is what I have learned from three of these sources.
1. Carol Sholette is my second cousin, whose grandparents were both brother and sister, respectively, of my grandfather and grandmother (i.e. two brothers, Maguire Sholette and Adelord Cholette married two sisters, Mary and Melina Richer.) Carol now lives in the Philadelphia area and has been communicating with me by email for about two years. Based on information from his relatives, he wrote this in a Family Genealogy Journal many years ago:
Mary Richer Sholette – born in Ogdensburg, N.Y. Mamere’s mother was Philomena Abar, born 1831 in Montreal, Canada. She married Nelson Richer in Ogdensburg, N.Y. His father was Louis de LaRicher, probably born in France. Louis’ father, my great-great-great-grandfather was also named Louis de La Richer, born in France. He was the Baron d’Orleans, France.
2. Some of the preceding may have been based partly on information from a
letter, dated April 26, 1961, from Ralph Richer of Syracuse (RD#3 Cedarvale
Road, Syracuse 15, NY) to his distant cousin, Gloria McMullen, Carol Sholette's niece, when she was writing a family genealogy as part of a college course.
...the name Richer is a corruption from the original name DeLaRichey (dit Laflèche). There is also another Richer family but from a different branch (Richer dit Lefotue). Our Great, Great Grandfather was the Baron of D'Orleans. He was survived by one son Louis DeLaRicher (1799 or 1819). Louis DeLaRicher had one son, Nelson Richey. Nelson Richey married Fannie Abarr. ( 1843-1901). They had five children: Henry, Nelson, Mary, Minnie, and William (1864-1949).
William Richer married Mary Louise Paige. They had eight children, Lula, Eva, William, Emma, Ralph (1899), Augustine, Theodore, and John. My grandfather Richer died in 1901 or 1902 and he was about 58 years old. My father was born June 5, 1869. Died Nov 10, 1949. I, Ralph E. Richer, was born Sept 16, 1899. Ogdensburg, NY. I was married to Marion Hokes, Sept 17, 1919 Syracuse, NY...
…During the political upheaval in France, Nelsis or Nelson Louis De La Richey escaped to England. Being a Royalist he was protected by the English Govt. He later was sent to Canada, where he established residence. His first wife died in France. He was survived by one son Nelsis, or Nelson Richey. He re-married and had another son named George. At that time due to political uncertainties the family was disintegrated. Some went South to Louisiana, but Grandfather Nelson Richey crossed the St. Lawrence River and settled in Northern New England, later came to Ogdensburg and married Fanny Abarr whom he had sent for where she lived in Quebec. He settled down in Ogdensburg, NY and devoted his life as a drayman, hackman, comparable to what a chauffer is today. He raised a large family first living in the third Ward and later moving to the second ward on Pine St.
(Note the dates given in the above were written in lightly and not very clearly--therefore, they may be in error.)
3. From Donald Ralph Richer, Sr., the son of Ralph Richer who wrote the above letter, I received this via email on July 20, 1999 through his son, Mark at mricher59@yahoo.com. It gives a somewhat more complete narrative of this family story.
This is Donald Richer Sr. …My father was
Ralph Richer. Gloria Sholette was one of our
cousins. My father had seven brothers and three
sisters Theodore, Andrew, Augustine, William, Jack and
Ralph (my father), I can't remember the last brother.
His sisters were Eva, Lou-Lou and Emma. They
subsequently had children and most of the children
became either Catholic Priests or Nuns, in fact I used
to kid them a lot because they were very close to me
in age incidentally I am 76 in age and I would call
them a bunch of Penguins because they were nuns.
My great-great-great-great grandparents came from
France. Their names were Barren Richer de la flesh,
which means "of the flesh". (Richer was pronounced Re
Shea) They were the cousins of Napoleon Bonaparte.
They attempted to assassinate him but because they
were "of the flash" they were not killed but banished
to Ottawa, Canada, which was owned by France at that
time. This is why everyone in Northern Canada speaks
French and the named Richer is very prominent there.
However because of the type of people they were at the
time, some started stealing horses in Ottawa and they
were banished from Ottawa and went into the United
States where they landed in Ogdensburg N.Y. The family
stayed there for many years and the family
expanded to the point where in Ogdensburg, everybody
including the Mayor, the Chief of police and everybody
else was named Richer…
…When they moved down to Syracuse, New York, my
grandfather and his seven sons and three daughters,
had a velvet plaque that was given to the family by
Napoleon, giving them Ottawa. One of my uncles, I
think it was my uncle Andrew who ended up with it but
I'm not sure and there are no traces of it to this day
but it gave them all of what is now Ottawa….
Now for your information in the city it of Ottawa there still
stands a castle called the "Richer De La Flesh
Castle". It is probably the castle that was built
back when Napoleon sent them to Ottawa, apparently
this is a magnificent castle. Our descendants were
Barrens of the flesh or of the monarchy…
The preceding family lore is certainly fascinating and is specific enough to be true. It would be more credible however, if it were from completely separate sources. Unfortunately, while told in three different places, it is quite likely that there was a single source for it all, and that person may have gotten some of it wrong. I have tried hard to connect my Richer ancestors with the Richer dit Laflèche line, but could not do so, even though I found many individuals with that full name.
Instead, what I have found from other sources is that my Richer family appears to be descended from the other branch of Richer’s, namely Richer dit Louvetau, not Richer dit Laflèche. Narcisse’s father was Joachim, not Louis, and his ancestors moved to Quebec in about 1700, more than 100 years before Napoleon’s time. Furthermore, while some in the family said that the name flèche meant “of the flesh”, meaning related to Napoleon, it actually means “arrow” and was likely a symbol worn by Richer men who were soldiers. Additionally, there is no evidence of a Louis Richer being the Baron d’Orleans in France, although the family may have lived initially in the early city of Chateau Richer, which lies just outside Quebec City on the Isle d’Orleans in the St. Lawrence River.
I will then return to the facts as I have found them from various sources, including published baptismal and marriage records. (Many of these are primary sources, but some are secondary sources, having been copied by others from the original records. A few are tertiary sources, whose reliability is questionable.) In what follows, I will give the sources for the information, and try to give you a sense of their reliability. Of course, with genealogy, it only takes one wrong name for a parent to make everything else which follows incorrect. While this might be the case in what I show next, I believe that it is the correct genealogy for this family, even though it does contradict the family folklore.
MELINA RICHER (1878-
1936)
Let’s start with my grandmother, Minnie Richer (pronounced Ree’-she). She was baptized in Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg, NY on April 9, 1878 (ref LDS microfilm #145079, item 11, p 127) with her name given (in what looks like a mixture of French and Latin) as Melinam Richer, and her parents listed as Narcisco Richer and Philomena Hebert. Her godparents were given as Henricus et Philomena Daoust. Her formal name, then was Melina and her parents were Narcisse Richer (known as Nelson, in English) and Philomena Hébert (or Anglicized to Abar, in many of Ogdensburg’s later generations). Based on the usual custom, this would mean that she was born either on the same day as her baptism, or the day previously, since baptisms were done very soon after birth. My father had listed her birth date as April 8, 1879, so I assume that the month and day were correct but that he was off by one year. Perhaps at some time in her life, she wanted to appear to be one year younger than she was. He had listed her parents’ names as Nelson Richer and Mary Abar.
Minnie subsequently was confirmed at Notre Dame on June 9, 1889, where she was listed as age 11. (LDS microfilm #1450739. item 1, p70.). Her marriage to Adelord Cholette occurred in that same church on Oct 11, 1878, as witnessed by their fathers, Mathias Cholette and Narcissus Richer (LDS microfilm 1450738, item 12, p 447, M-28).
She subsequently had nine children, the first seven of whom were baptized at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg, and the last two in Auburn, NY:
1. Beatrice, baptized Nov 1, 1899
2. Bernadette, Aug 1, 1901
3. Adelord, July 29, 1903
4. Blanche, Aug 28, 1905
5. Lillian, Jan 22, 1908
6. William, my father, Jan 26, 1910
7. Frederick, July 26, 1913
8. Edgar, May 20, 1919
9. Eugene, May 7, 1921
Minnie died on Feb 14, 1936 and was buried in St. Joseph’s
Cemetery in Auburn, NY. (I can still remember my Dad on each Valentine’s Day reminiscing about his mother dying on that day.) Her husband, Adelord Cholette died about a year later, on Jan 22, 1937 and is buried next to his wife.
NARCISSE RICHER (1838 – 1902)
Melina Richer’s parents, as listed in her baptismal record were Narcisse Richer and Philomena Hébert. The very early records at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg give their marriage date as April 26, 1860. (LDS microfilm 1450738, item 9, p39, M-22). The recorded entry follows (in French, and then my translation):
L’an en

s’etre maries a
l’Eglise protestante, j’ai, soussigne beni le mariage du

Charles Maricau.
In the year of our Lord, April 29, 1860, after having
imposed a punishment based on Canon (law) on the Richer
wife for having been married in a Protestant church, I, the undersigned bless
the marriage of Narcisse Richer,
son, of major age, of Joachim and of Justine Dodelin,
born in Montreal and living
in this parish for a (year?) and of Philomene Cahien, daughter, of major age,
of Pierre Cahien and Mary Primou and married them in the
site of
the Roman Church witnessed by Edward Garifeg and Charles
Maricau.
(Note: For some time I was very confused by the use of the name Cahien instead of Abar or Hébert as my father and others in the family had indicated. This was especially confusing since the baptismal records of the children used Cahien in some places and Hébert in others. For a while I even suspected that Narcisse had two wives, Philomene Cahien first, and then Philomene Hébert. However, this was cleared up when I found more documentation that strongly indicated this was the same person, but had two differing names in the records. I subsequently learned that the name Cahien was sometimes used to refer to the Hébert family to denote that they were from Acadia, now Nova Scotia; Cahien being a corruption similar to Cajun, for these people, many of whom subsequently emigrated to Louisiana. In later records at Notre Dame Church, both Hébert and Abar are used for their name and Cahien is missing.)
Evidently, the couple was previously married in a Protestant Church in Ogdensburg, or elsewhere. Notre Dame Church was founded shortly before this re-marriage ceremony in April, 1858. Prior to that time, French Canadian couples in Ogdensburg were either married at St. Mary’s Church (which was the Irish church at the time), or in a near-by Episcopal church where they were often made more welcome. Evidently, Narcisse and Philomene were married in this, or some other Protestant Church, although I have not found a record of their actual marriage. (I have been told the Catholic Church often found the woman to be guilty in such a situation rather than both parties.) Recorded at about the same time at Notre Dame Church were the baptisms of their first two sons:
1. Narcisse Richer, on April 27, 1859, born on Feb 8, 1857, son of Narcisse Richer and Philomene Cahien; godparents: Pierre Cahien and Justine Dodelin. (Note: godparents of first children were often the grandparents, sometimes one of the mother’s parents and one of the father’s, although as shown later, this couple married each other, after their first spouses died).
2. Henry Richer, also on April 27, 1859, born Jan 21, 1859, son of Narcisse Richer and Philomene Cahien; godparents: Pierre Cahien and Justine Dodelin.
More confusion in tracking this family is shown by the following marriage record concerning Narcisse and Philomene’s parents. From Notre Dame Church documents (LDS # 1450738 p91 M-7 for May 8, 1862; shown in the original French and followed by my translation into English.), I found this:
le huit mai, apres avoir impose une fereture canonique a

j’ai soussigne beni le mariage de
Pierre Cahien Hébert, fils majeur d’André Cahien et d’Arebraug Chaperon, véuf

paroisse d’autre parte, et les ai maires en fare de l’Eglisse souisa en presénce de Benjamin Coralian Perey et d’Alexandre Parey.
On May
8, after having imposed a punishment based on Canon (law) on the Cahien Hébert
wife for having been married (twice?) by a protestant minister, I, the
undersigned bless the marriage of Pierre Cahien Hébert, son (age of majority)
of André Cahien and Arebraug Chaperon, widower of Marie Marcil and of Marie
Primo, and _______ born at St. Constant, diocese of Montreal and a resident of
one part of this parish and
Justine Dodelin, daughter (age of majority) of François
Dodelin and Marianne Riando,
born in Boucherville, also in the Montreal diocese and a
resident of another part of this
parish, and married them on the site of this
souisa(?) church in the presence of
Benjamin Coralian Perey and Alexander Parey.
(NOTE 1: utilizing this information, I looked at the Hébert web site (www.genweb.net~hebert) and found a reference showing that Marie-Archange Chaperon was married to Andre Hébert and they had a son, Pierre who was married to (1) Marie-Anne Marcille and (2) Marie-Amable Primeau,. Thus, I was able to connect all this together and provide a linkage back to the original Héberts of Port Royal, Acadia.)
(NOTE 2: Interestingly, this third marriage of Pierre Cahien Hébert was to Justine Daudelin, who was Pierre's daughter's mother-in-law. Evidently, the two in-laws married each other after their spouses died. Since the notation recorded above seems to imply that this may have been a re-marriage at Notre Dame, it is not clear when this couple was originally married.)
Including the two sons mentioned previously, Narcisse Richer and Philomena Hébert had a total of eight children, with my grandmother, Melina the youngest, and my second cousin, Carol Sholette’s grandmother, Marie Alphonsine, the 5th child. The children were (ref: LDS microfilm 1450738 for births, marriages and baptisms.)
1. Narcisse Richer, born Feb 8, 1857 in Ogdensburg. He likely was a brother in the Catholic Church, taught at Oremo College in Quebec and died in 1905 in Rigeau, Qc. (all according to the Ralph Richer 1961 letter).
2. Henry Richer, born January 21, 1859 in Ogdensburg, married Melina St. Germaine and had 13 children.
3. Joachim Richer, born May 30, 1861 in Ogdensburg.
4. Philomene Richer, baptized Sept 11, 1864 in Ogdensburg
5. Marie Alphonsine Richer, born May 14, 1867 in Ogdensburg, and married Maglorie Sholette and had three children
6. William Richer, born June 26, 1870 in Ogdensburg, married Lousia LePage and had nine children
7. Joseph Richer, baptized June 25, 1872 in Ogdensburg
8. Melina Richer, born April 8, 1878 in Ogdensburg, married Adelord Cholette and had nine children.
The census in Ogdensburg for 1870 (ref. A1) listed Narcisse as Nelson
Ritchie, age 32, which means that he was born in about 1838. It also lists his wife as Phebe Ritchie, age 29, and children Nelson, age 13, Henry age 11, Mary, age 4 and William, age 1 month. Joachim and Philomene presumably died in infancy since they were not listed in the census. Likewise, Joseph, who was born after the census may have died in infancy since subsequent family records show no reference to him, or to Joachim or Philomene. (Ref B-1)
Narcisse Richer died in Ogdensburg and was buried on Oct 3, 1902 at about age 71. His wife, Philomena died sometime after 1907 in Ogdensburg, perhaps as late as 1918.
As indicate previously, Narcisse Richer’s parents were Joachim Richer and
Justine Daudelin. Their names are given in the marriage record for Narcisse and Philomene at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg. In searching for Joachim and Justine’s parents, I utilized a “look-up source” that I found on the web. (Look-ups are done by volunteers who look at published civil and church records as an aid for others doing genealogical research. In Canada, the Catholic records are quite readily available and Joachim’s and Justine’s marriage was found. It helps greatly that these records uniformly use the woman’s married name for all the sacramental records, and that many of the marriage records contain both parents’ names.) From this I found that Joachim Richer and Justine Daudelin were married on Oct 28, 1834 in Notre Dame Church in Montreal, Qc. 13 .
Presumably there were other children besides Narcisse, but I have not yet found a record of them. His father, Joachim, was born Aug 19, 1798 in Pointe Claire. His wife, Justine Daudelin was born Feb 29, 1816 in Boucherville and died Feb 13, 1879. Joachim must have died before 1862, since that is when Justine was married again, this time to Pierre Hébert, the widower of Marie Primeau and the father of Narcisse’s wife, Philomena Hébert.
JACQUES RICHER (? - ?)
From his marriage records, Joachim Richer’s parents
were given as Jacques Richer and Marguerite Lefebvre21 who were
married on Sept 28, 1795
in Pointe Claire, Qc.22. Jacques Richer21, a journalist25 by
occupation, was the son of Joseph-Marie Richer-dit-Louvetau and Elisabeth-Marie-Isabelle
Guittar-dit-LaGrandeur. He married Marguerite Lefebvre23,
born February 16, 177224.
She was the daughter of
Jean-Baptiste Lefebvre dit Boulanger and Marie-Françoise Paiement/LaRiviere.
Children of Jacques Richer and Marguerite Lefebvre:
i. Jacques Richer, born May 29, 1797 in Ste-Genevieve,
Pierrefonds, Qc28. He was buried November 07, 1797, Pointe
Claire, Qc29
ii.
Joachim
Richer, born August 19, 1798 in Pointe Claire, Qc; died Bef. 1862; married
Justine Daudelin October 28, 1834 in Notre Dame Church, Montreal, Qc.
(note: there were probably
other children, but my primary source for these records, PRDH, lists baptisms
only up though 1799.)
The
remaining generations of this family are shown below, as compiled from the PRDH
references for early Quebec. This source is extremely reliable and lists almost
all baptisms, marriages and deaths in Quebec from its initial settlement as New
France up through 1799. The initials stand for Programme de Recherche en
Démographie Historique and it is located at the U. of Montreal’s web site at:

France. He married Jacqueline Piri sometime before 1665169.

family.
Child of Jacques Richer and Jacqueline
Piri:
i. Jacques Richer-dit-Louvetau, born Abt. 1664 in Louvetot, arch. rouen, normandie, (ar. rouen, seine-maritime), FRance; married Marie Jofrion-dit-St.Jean April 07, 1698 in Montreal, Qc..

Ego baptizam Melinam Richer ...(parents:) Narcisco Richer et Philomena Hebert.
Patrina Henricus et Philomena Daoust."
2. LDS Film # 1450738 Notre Dame Church
Records, Ogdensburg,NY, item 9 p39 M-22, this reference gives marriage of
Narcisse to Philomena Cahien and indicates that he was from Montreal. A letter
from Ralph Richer to his cousin, Gloria (Carol Sholette's niece) says he was about 58 years old when he died
in 1901 or 02. However, this date of about 1843 would make him only a teenager
when his sons were born. Other notes in Carol Sholette's files list Narcisse as
being born in 1831. they also indicate this was in Ogdensburg, but Im pretty
sure that is wrong. A more likely date would be about 1835, a year after his
parent's marriage. However, in 1870 Census, he is listed as being 32 years old,
meaning he was born about 1838. Used this date. Name in census listed as Nelson
Ritchie.
