FINDING MY PALMER AND PENFOLD ANCESTORS

Outlined below are the procedures and thought process I used in identifying my Palmer and Penfold ancestors, as presently shown in the family tree.

1. From my mother (Dorothy Palmer Cholette), Aunt Teddy (Marjorie Jean Palmer Crowell), Dorothy Palmer Chatt (and her sister Helen), and Evelyn Palmer Johnston, I obtained the following information on the family:

A. The names of my grandfather (Fred Palmer)'s parents were John Palmer and Jane Penfold, and they lived in Surrey County England.

B. John Palmer was a proprietor of the Amato Inn in Epsom.

C. The names of all their children, along with most of their marriages were known. Many birth dates of these children were known.

D. Jane Penfold died about 1912 and John remarried her sister, Alice. (ref: letter from Evelyn Johnston says her grandfather married Jane's sister, Alice. An email from Dorothy Chatt via her husband Bob, 2001 confirmed the name Alice, but not the fact that she was Jane's sister: “…Dottie remembers visiting the AMATO many times when Alice was there. Dottie's Dad (Bert) never called Alice 'Mom', and Dottie and Helen just called her 'Aunt Alice'. They didn't know she was Jane's sister. After Dottie's grandfather (John) died, Alice inherited everything.”)

E. Modification of above comment: I have subsequently been in contact with the last remaining sibling of my grandfather, Ethel Palmer Betteridge, who is now 97 years old (in 2002) and living in London. I was able to obtain her address and wrote to her. While she was unable to provide much additional information about her family, since she was just 8 years old when her mother died in 1912, she did say that her step mother was not her mother's sister, but instead was a previously unmarried woman named Alice Venn. (see item 9 below for more about how Alice Venn may have been related to the family.)

F. John had a brother named Ned and Jane had brothers named: William, Tobias and Fred (ref.: Letter from Helen Palmer to Dorothy (Toots) Palmer Chatt in 2001, sent via email to me by Bob Chatt, says:

“...I've been going through some more papers and have some info. I seem to remember Daisy giving me some of this. There are no dates but Granddad Palmer had a brother named Ned Palmer who was a bricklayer in Tadworth, Surrey. Grandmother Palmer had three brothers: Bill Penfold lived in Walton on the Hill, Fred Penfold was the one we met, he lived next door to St. Peters Church, Walton on the Hill, Tobias Penfold lived in Epsom.”)

2. From the inheritance investigation done following the death on Sept 17, 1997 of Julia Kathleen McHugh, the daughter of Kate Palmer McHugh, my grandfather's sister, the British firm, Title Research, sent me a full report of the descendants of John Palmer and Jane Penfold. This also gave their marriage as Oct 17, 1880, with their first son, John Edward born Dec 15, 1880. Based on this, I searched the British marriage index and found only one record that fit these names, this period of time, and the County of Surrey. (Palmer, John 1880 December quarter, Reigate Vol 2a page 239; Spouse's name: Penfold, Jane; marriage date: Oct 17, 1880). I paid a London company, A&H Associates, to locate the marriage certificate at the General Registry Office (GRO), which they then sent to me. Certificate B008359 shows that John Palmer, age 21 married Jane Penfold, age 19, on Oct 17, 1880 in Brockham parish. His father was listed as John Palmer, a laborer and her father was listed as William Penfold, bricklayer. Richard Palmer and Charlotte Palmer witness it.)

3. In the British 1881 census, I found John Palmer and Jane listed. It shows that

John Palmer and his wife Jane were living on Tamworth St. in Banstead,

Surrey County with their 3-month-old son, John E. Palmer, who had been born

in Walton. The husband was listed as being 21, born in Banstead, and his

wife 19, born in Walton.

4. Based on the above information, I searched for Jane Penfold in the British Birth Index and found one that seemed like a reasonable fit, listing a Jane Penfold born in the June Quarter 1861, Reigate Vol 2A page 148. I had A&H Associates track this down and send it to me. However this certificate listed her father as Thomas Penfold and her mother as Sarah Miller. It also gives her birthplace as Charlwood. I reluctantly decided that this was probably not the correct Jane Penfold since the father's name was incorrect as was her place of birth.

5. I also asked A&H Associates to locate a birth record for John Palmer based on his approximate birth date and the location of Banstead. From this, they found one that fit. It gives the birth of John Edward Palmer on July 19, 1859 with his mother listed as Elizabeth Palmer, but with no father named. This would indicate that she was unmarried. Her residence is given as Banstead. Since this fit with his age, place of birth and even gave a middle name of Edward, like that of his first son, it is almost certainly correct. However, the lack of a father's name makes the verification more difficult. His father's name, listed as John Palmer on his marriage certificate, may have been falsified. Perhaps his first name was John, but almost certainly Palmer was not his last name.

6. Searching the IGI file at the LDS web site, I have found the following record for a christening. It shows that John Edward Palmer was christened on Aug 21, 1859 at St. Andrews, Kingswood by Reigate, Surrey. His mother is listed as Elizabeth Palmer, but no father is listed. (ref. Batch: J132751; Film No. 0991778.)

(Note: Kate Burns, a likely Penfold relative, who lived in Surrey County, sent me this email: “Walton is in Surrey, but it is not Walton on the Hill … they are miles apart. Sometimes it goes under the name Walton on Thames. It would be misleading to use Walton as a place name - that is taken to be Walton on Thames. Also, I cannot see how you would realize that St. Andrews, Kingswood by Reigate is one of the churches often used by people of Banstead/WOTH... how could you unless you roamed there - sorry! It is like St. Peter the Apostle being one end of WOTH and St. Andrews the other - a couple of miles apart.)

7. Siblings of John Palmer:

Line 1F above indicates that there was a brother Ned. This would almost

certainly been for the name Edward. I have not found an Edward, son of Elizabeth in the

records. However, using the LDS IGI British Index, I did find a reference to a

Richard and Charlotte Palmer who almost certainly were the couple that was indicated on John Palmer and Jane Penfold's marriage certificate as their witnesses. I did not find Richard and Charlotte's marriage, but did find records for two daughters:

A. Charlotte Marie Palmer, daughter of Richard Thomas Palmer and

Charlotte Hannah, christened 4 May, 1873 at St. Andrews, Kingswood

By Reigate, Surrey, England (Batch # K132751, source # 0991778) and

B. Mary Anne Palmer, daughter of Thomas Palmer and Charlotte,

christened 25 April 1875, at St. Andrews, Kingswood By Reigate,

Surrey, England (Batch # K132751, source # 0991778).

7A. John Palmer's Parents:

Using the information found above for Richard Thomas Palmer and his wife Charlotte, I was able to identify the christening record for Richard Thomas Palmer in the IGI records at the LDS Family Search, Batch C013712. This gave his christening as April 11, 1852 in Walton on the Hill, Surrey, with parents James and Elizabeth Palmer. Searching farther, I found several other children of this couple, including Elizabeth Sarah Palmer, christened November 8, 1840.

With the aid of Brian Mayes from England who is also related to the Palmer family, we concluded that there was a very high probability that this Elizabeth Sarah Palmer was the Elizabeth Palmer who was John Palmer's mother. There is no other Elizabeth Palmer found in that time period in Surrey. It would have been natural to have Elizabeth's younger brother, Richard Thomas Palmer, and his wife Charlotte serve as witnesses to the marriage. Once this Elizabeth Palmer was established, I was able to connect several previous generations, based on Brian's work, as well as other IGI records.

It is almost certain that Elizabeth was not married at the time of John's birth. Whether she married later is not clear, since no further records of Elizabeth appear after his birth in 1859. In the 1841 census, Elizabeth is 8 months old living with her parents and siblings Edward and Caroline. She is not listed in the 1861 census although her younger brother (Richard) Thomas is listed, then age 9 living with his parents. Interestingly, also listed living with the family is John Wait, age 2, listed as the grandson of James and Mary Palmer, the parents of Elizabeth Sarah. This leads one to speculate that this John Wait is, in fact, John Palmer, my great-grandfather. If so, then his father's last name was Wait. Living next door to the family in 1861 was a border named Thomas Wait, age 10 born in Bishop Watham, Hampshire. Could he possibly be connected to this Wait family?

8. More searching for Jane Penfold:

Through various Penfold listings on the Web, I located Kate Burns, nee Penfold, who is from Surrey County, but now lives in Australia. She has census and birth records showing that William Penfold, a bricklayer in Walton-on-the-Hill was the common law husband of Mary Letts and they had a daughter Jane, born in Walton-on-the-Hill, who was age 9 in the 1871 census. She also sent me Jane's birth record (Dec 14, 1861) showing her mother as Mary Letts and no father listed. This all fits very well with what I already know about Jane. In the 1881 census she was listed as age 19, married to John Palmer. Here in the 1871 census she is listed as age 9. In the 1881 census she is listed as being born in Walton. In the 1871 census she is listed as from Walton-on-the-Hill. Since these facts fit so well, along with her father's name being William, a bricklayer, I am pretty certain this is the correct Jane Letts/Penfold. If this is indeed correct, I can then connect all of the information that Kate Burns has collected on this branch of the family. I have a high degree of confidence in what she has recorded, based on her philosophy of how to do genealogical research and the ample IGI and census documentation that she has for the various events. Some of her information on the family is shown next.

It turns out that William Penfold was married first to Ann Letts, on November 30, 1850. They had 5 children before Ann died in 1856. From census records, it is apparent that he then lived with Ann's sister Mary, although no marriage record can be found. Together he and Mary had eight children. Another child born to Mary in 1854, named Phebe, was likely by another man. Among these eight children were Jane, born in Dec 14, 1861 and her older sister, Alice, christened on Dec 21, 1856. Many of the children subsequently used Penfold as their last name. One of these was Frederick, born in 1870. This name would fit with that in item 1E of a brother named Fred. Additionally, by Ann Letts, there was a half-brother William, which also fits with item 1. However, I can find no record of a Tobias, although it is possible that this was a nickname for one of the brothers that I do list.

The reference to Fred Penfold living next to St. Peter's (item 1F above) may perhaps be confirmed by some information from Kate Burns. In the census records, she found that some of these Penfolds did in fact live next door to St. Peter's in the 1870's. While Helen Palmer's reference was from the 1920's or 30's, it is a connection that might have still existed for a common residence used through the years by the Penfolds. While quite speculative, it is an interesting factor to consider.

9. As indicated in item 1E, above, it appears that although Jane Penfold had a sister named Alice, she was not the second wife of John Palmer. Instead this woman was Alice Venn. It turns out, that from Kate Burns records, there was an Alice Venn, born in 1875, who was the daughter of Edwin Venn and Elizabeth Ann Penfold, the half-sister of Jane Penfold. If this was John Palmer's second wife, then she was Jane's niece, not daughter. This could explain why she was called Aunt by some of the cousins and presumed to have been Jane's sister.

10. Based on all of the above considerations, I have now been able to utilize what I have

found, along with information from Kate Burns to assemble a fairly complete family tree for this branch. It is most easily shown as “Descendants of Elijah Penfold”, since he is the earliest ancestor. This is shown below.

She married EDWIN VENN May 23, 1874 in Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey, England, son of RICHARD VENN and BARBARA LONGHURST. He was born October 01, 1848 in Ashton, Surrey, England.

11. PHEBE4 LETTS (WILLIAM3 PENFOLD, ELIJAH2, GEORGE1) was born Abt. December 10, 1854 in Blue Ball Inn, Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey, England, and died Abt. 1878. She married PETER PENFOLD Abt. 1876, son of ELIJAH PENFOLD and SOPHIA KNIGHT. He was born April 03, 1831 in Banstead, Surrey, England.

Child is listed above under (4) Peter Penfold.
