Ancestors of Pauline Elizabeth Siegwart

Generation No. 2

      2. Johann "Gottlieb"* Sigwart/Siegwart, born October 14, 1855 in Baiersbronn-Dorf, Wuerttemberg, Germany; died April 19, 1936 in Brookfield Twp., Huron Co., MI. He was the son of 4. Gottlieb* Sigwart, (AFR 924) and 5. Elisabetha* Haist. He married 3. Magdalena* Braun September 24, 1887 in Fair Haven Twp., Huron Co., MI.

      3. Magdalena* Braun, born December 16, 1856 in Baiersbronn-Berg, Schwarzw., Wuerttemberg, Germany; died March 02, 1933 in Chandler Twp., Huron Co., MI. She was the daughter of 6. Jacob* Braun, (AFR 62) and 7. Elisabeth* Ehmann.

Notes for Johann "Gottlieb"* Sigwart/Siegwart:
Gottlieb and his mother came to the U.S. through Canada when he was 18 looking for a half brother named Brockmeier/Brockmeyer, who had fought for the north in the Civil War, and had been wounded. The last place they had heard of him was New Orleans, LA. - they never found him. (Information was given by Francis Siegwart to Helen Farver Wichert, but Frank had him as being 25 yrs. old.)

On the 1920 Census, Gottlieb states that his father was born in Lorraine, his mother and him in Wuettemberg, Germany.

George Shaw states that Gottlieb was born in Stuttgart, Wuerttemberg, Germany.

1st wife Elizabeth fell on the ice & bled to death while Gottlieb was away at work, leaving the 4 children under 5 years of age. (info. by Francis; but he had her name as Catherine)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
1919-Lived R.#1, Chandler Twp., Huron Co., Elkton, MI. on Twp. Rd. #48 (on Crown Rd. between Herford & Moore Rd.). Owned 120 acres - on an Independant telephone Line.

It appears that Gottlieb & Magdalena moved to this property about 1914. This was a beautiful piece of property with the river running through it. Margie & George Shaw told me how they loved going there, and George said that Gottlieb had a large grape vineyard and would make about 7 barrels of wine every year from the grapes.

In January of 1933 there was a Foreclosure Notice posted in the Pigeon Progress newspaper on this property.

1900 Census shows surname as Secord.
1904 Huron Co. Directory shows his surname as Sequant & Siequant
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to cousin Eileen Schmaus, Gottlieb contracted for Magdalena Braun to be brought to States from Germany to be his wife, after the death of Elizabeth. Eileen said that Grandma had even showed her the letter. But, this doesn't seem possible knowing that Magdalena was already living in Huron Co., Michigan, when his wife died. Maybe, the letter was sent to her brother Jacob's house in Fair Haven Twp.

From the Huron Co., 1904 Biographies on Microfilm at the Mt. Clemens, MI. Library:
SEQUANT, G. Son of Gottleib and Elizabeth Sequant, both born in Germany. Born in Germany Oct. 15, 1855. Grew to manhood and received his education in the high school of Germany. Emigrated to the United States with his mother in 1873. He followed trade of machinist. Married Elizabeth Zimmer, who was born in Canada. She died in Kilmanagh in 1887 and buried at Sebewaing, Mich. There are nine children, Barnett, 2 yrs. old, deceased; Christ, 1 yr. old, deceased; Lottie, died in infancy; Mary, 24; Katie, 23; John, 22; Charles, 21 Louis, 15; Frederick, 14; Paulina, 11; Albert, 9; and Laura 6 yrs. old.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to his death certificate he was 80 yrs. 6 months, 14 days on the day of his death, which was April 19, 1936.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
1880 Census for Huron Co., MI.: Shows Gottlieb, age 24, born in Prussia, occupation was farmer, married to Elizabeth born in Canada (her parents from Prussia), age 20, daughter Mary, age 1, born in Canada, and Elizabeth Siegwart, born in Prussia, age 75 or 85. This seems to verify that the Elisabeth & Gottlieb Siegwart in Germans to America were the correct people, and that they stayed in Canada until 1879-1880 before coming to Huron Co., MI.
