Includes NotesNotes for Roderick Due Lake:
According to Civil War records, Roderick is described as having been 5 foot 5 inches tall or 5foot 8 inches tall. He suffered from a gunshot wound to his right lung during the Civil War which left him with a musket ball in his lung for the rest of his life. He received a pension of $8.00 per month for his disability. He enlisted as a corporal in August 1862 at the age of 21. He was a member of Company D, 120th infantry regiment of New York. He was wounded on November 27, 1863 in Locus Grove, Virginia and is listed as Distinguished Service.

The family moved to Ohio and then to Illinois. He left the family in Illinois to go to Kansas to homestead 80 acres. He built a home and started farming. Anna and the children then joined him.

Living in Kansas plains was hard. One day after returning from a trip to Irving, Kansas, they found a prairie fire had burned all their crops but they were able to save the buildings and livestock.

Anna died of tuberculosis when our grandmother, Della was only thirteen years old. The day of the funeral, the family returned home to a tornado which did take the buildings.

The family left Kansas, traveling with the Cooper family. When they reached Nebraska, Della recalled James Ferdinand Cooper, who was 18 years old at he time, saying to her: "Let's get hitched". They were married in 1879.

Roderick lived in Colorado before moving to California. He died at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers of pneumonia.
