It is said I am descended from Milton Paul Church, b. November 04, 1856 in St. Francois Co., MO and Margaret Catherine Haddock, b. March 08, 1853 in St. Francois Co., MO. Census evidence appears to prove this is not true. Milton Paul was incarcerated in the Missouri State Penitentiary in 1880 and during the time my grandfathter was conceived. Margaret died about1890. Milton Paul is said to have married Margaret's 1st cousin, Mary Evelyn Haddock, November 19, 1891, according to a family bible. This marriage has never been verified or confirmed. He married Mary Salina Brewer Robinson on July 4, 1893, and placed his three children by Margaret, James Henry, Charles Willard, and Martha Jane 'Mattie', into foster homes, and raised her children in his house according to the 1900 Census. James Henry, my grandfather, was placed with the Louis Cleavy family. Milton Paul's father was believed to be Sameul M. (Matthew?) Church b. 1821 in TN. according to the 1860 Cenus,
Lincoln Christian Barton was my maternal Great Grandfather, born December 30, 1861, in Lawrence, KS. His father was Joseph Barton, b. October 20, 1832 in York Co., PA. Joseph's father, John Barton, b. July 12, 1802, was married to Catherine Umberger, b. abt. 1806 in York Co., PA. Joseph went to the California gold rush in 1852, before he married Adeline Eby(Rife)Reiff on December 16, 1858 at Richland Co., OH. His adventures and those of his son Everett in the Alaska Gold Rush can be seen at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~klondike98/california.htm. My Reiff ancestors go back to Switzerland, in 1590.
Joseph's and Adeline's son Lincoln Christian married Frances (Fannie) Ellen Ellis, whose father was William Ellis, a Confederate Conscript who was captured before he could enlist and sent to a POW Camp at Rock Island, IL, where he died. William's father, David Ellis, lived in Smith, TN, from 1811-1855. His father, Bejamin Ellis II, was born in Richland Creek, Rowan, NC, in 1763, married in Greenville, SC, in 1786, and died in Texas County, MO about 1848. Benjamin Ellis was born in Kent, MD in 1741, and died in Hartsville, Smith Co., TN, about 1802. His father was William, born about 1704 in Sewalls Branch, Kent Co., MD, and died in 1761 at Rowan, NC. John Clarn Ellis, William's father, was born in 1661 in St. Paul's Parrish, Kent Co., MD. and died there about 1719. His father was John Ellis, born Bet. 1626-1630 at Yorkshire, England. He married about 1655 in Kent Co., MD, and died there around 1669. John Ellis's Father, also John was born in England around 1607 and died in Ann Arundel, MD in 1657. It is interesting to note that Maryland was founded by the Calvert Family around 1633 after being given a land grant from the king of England. The Calvert's aggressively enlisted families and persons to develop their holdings in the new world. It would appear the Ellis' may have been one of those families who elected to seek their fortune in the new world.
My Plowman ancestor's hail from Henry Plowman, b. 1798 and was, we think, from NC, and Sarah Graham, b. 1803. Henry may have spelled his name Ploughman. It is believed Sarah was from KY or TN. Their son Daniel, my maternal g. g. grandfather was born about 1825, in Franklin Twp., Washington Co., Indiana. He married November 16, 1855 to Martha Garner, and died from Black Scurvy on January 11, 1869. His son, William Henry Monroe Plowman , was born January 11, 1861, married Sarah Amaryllis Duncan on January, 1891 in Shannon Co., MO, had ten children, and died in 1945. His daughter, Nellie Viola, was my Mother's mother. Nellie was born in Cuba, MO about 1900 and died from tuberculosis in 1926, in Fresno, CA. Her father, mother, husband, oldest daughter Maxine, and others climbed into several cars, one being a Grand Touring model converted to carry a bed for Nellie, and trekked across country to California from southern Missouri. They were taking Nellie to a friend in Fresno, CA that worked
