Notes for P
HILLIP SHEW:
Early Ancestors
By: Robert Farrell

DISCLAIMER: The ancestors of Simon K. Shew are not known with great certainty at the time of this writing. However, enough circumstantial evidence exists to make an educated guess based on sound genealogical reasoning, while awaiting the necessary documentation to establish a valid family tree. Corrections, additions, or additional documentation are always welcomed, as is constructive criticism. The following incorporates a great deal of information obtained by Micheal F. Cavenaugh of Baltimore, MD, a thorough and dedicated genealogist to whom this writer owes much gratitude.

It is reasonably apparent that the name SHEW and its surname variations (i.e., Schuh, Shuh, Shoe, Shue) are derived from the German surname SCHUH, which literally means - "shoe". The name traces its ancestry to a family of Teutonic origin before the year 1100, appearing first in the ancient records of Bavaria in Eastern Europe. The name may have possibly been derived from the much earlier surname SCHUCH. As was common during that time, some names were often used as a prefix for other surnames to describe the occupation of an individual. Therefore, a person named SCHUMACHER (SCHU(H)MAN, SCHUSTER) was actually a shoe maker or cobbler by trade.

The SCHUH Family Coat of Arms traces its roots back to ancient times where it was carried onto the field of honor with chivalry to defend family, allies, kings, and country. The coat-of-arms, or "blazon" is described as:
Shield - Silver background with a knight holding a pike.
Crest - Five ostrich feathers.

The SHUH family of primary interest to this particular research effort first appears in the southern part of Pennsylvania, gradually spreading southward through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and eventually settling heavily in western North Carolina. The patriach appears to have been Jacob SHUH who shows up in the Shenandoah Valley region in the late 1770's. Jacob SHUH died about 1785 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, as JOHN LOCKMILLER, his son-in-law and executor, posted an Executor's Bond on December 29, 1785. Jacob's wife was not mentioned, so she may have died, but on January 21, 1786 the value of the estate was increased by the sale of "the Widow's Cloaths", so she may have died after her husband. Jacob had been named in the heads of families in 1783, as well as Benhamin, Jabetz, and Joseph SHUE. The heads of families in 1785 showed Abraham SHUE, Joseph SHUE, Jacob SHUE, Phillip SHUE, Catherine SHUE, Daniel SHUE, and Christina SHUE. His children were as follows, in no special order.

1. Jabetz born 1752, died in York, PA, married Anna NISSELEY, daughter of Henry NISSELEY and Elizabeth REIFFE. He lived briefly in Frederick County, MD in the late 1780's and was in Lancaster in 1800 and York County in 1810. He had children Magdalena, Henry, Jacob, Barbara, Esther and a female who married Israel PORTER.

2. Jacob was living with his sister Sabina LOCKMILLER on the 1788 tax list.

3. Philip was in York County, PA in 1807, and lived next door to Jabez in the 1810 census of York County.

4. Augustine married Dorothy STICKLEY June 18, 1803 in Shenandoah County.

5. Benjamin's heirs were mentioned in his father's estate settlement, but he may not have been dead. One Benjamin SHUE and wife Mary sold some land on August 4, 1799 that had been purchased in 1782.

6. Joseph died before 1817 and had 7 children, Abraham, Joseph, Jacob, Philip, Catherine, Daniel and Christina.

7. Elizabeth who married _____ WISSEGERVER.

8. Margaret who married _____ MAUK.

9. Landina who married John HOLTZ.

10. Sabina born November 14, 1754, died October 24, 183 in Indiana, married Mary 31, 1782 John LOCKMILLER. They had children Jacob, Geoge, Abram, John, and Jonas born February 22, 1787 and died May 9, 1857 in Lawrence County, Indiana, Henry, Frederick, Sarah, Philip, and David.

11. Rosina who married December 20, 1785 George SUMMER.

12. Catherine "Gartrout" who married August 17, 1787 George HAWKE.

13. Eva.

Suppositions

According to family researcher Michael F. Cavenaugh, "Virtually all of the SHOE family members in North Carolina came from Philip Shoe, who was a landowner in Guilford County by 1780. There is a Shoe Road there now in the lower left of the county near the Alamance County line. He and most (but not all) of his children moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina about 1800. The spelling changed to Shew in Wilkes County. His children were Eve Anna born 1772 who married John Henry Lenderman, Henry born about 1781 who stayed in Guilford and had a large family, Daniel born about 1781 who married first Eve Dorothy York, Johanna who married Jacob Thornbergh in 1807, Jacob who had a large family in Wilkes County, Simon born about 1788 who married Mary Sutes in Wilkes County in 1817 and had a large family, Mary who married John Shattely in 1813, John Philip born about 1791 who married Sarah "Sally" Work in 1814, Boston who married Elizabeth Brewer in Wilkes County in 1816, Joel born about 1801 who married Anna Popham in Wilkes County, and Hessie who married John Glass in 1827 in Wilkes County. The following children moved to Indiana in 1827: Eve Anna, Danile, John Philip, and Joel."

It is possible that the following genealogies reflect the actual descendants of the child Philip, however much more work is needed and of course, proper documentation. With this in mind, we may now suppose a continuation of the family line listed.

By: Michael F. Cavenaugh of Baltimore, MD

Philip Shoe first appears in Guilford County, NC land records in February 1780, and in the 1790 census with 4 males under 14 and 4 females, which should include the wife. In the 1800 census they were both over 45. Most of their children moved to Indiana about 1826. Virtually all of the Shoe/Shew family members in North Carolina descended from Philip Shoe, who was a landowner in Guilford County by 1780. There is a Shoe Road in the southwest part of the county near the Alamance County line. He and most (but not all) of his children moved to Wilkes County about 1800. The spelling changed to Shew in Wilkes. Some of Philip's children, including Eve Anna, Daniel, John Philip, and Joel moved to Indiana ca. 1826-27.

Philip Shoe and wife, Susannah, were in Guilford County, North Carolina before coming to Wilkes County, North Carolina. The will of Philip Shoe was probated in Wilkes County, North Carolina, October 1832. (Information provied by Linda Reavis)
